Jackie was born on May 21st,1929 in St. Catharines, Ontario to John and Geraldine (Hetherington) Lawson. Jackie was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, A. Donald “Don” Maynes (2002). She was a loving mother to Robert (Margaret Gehrs) and the late Elizabeth (Bruce Rhodes). David Rhodes, her only grandchild, was her pride and joy. She was predeceased by her twin sister Geraldine (Graham) Claus.
Jackie grew up in St. Catharines where she met her future husband, Don (the boy next door). After completing a teaching diploma, she began her working career as a teacher in a one room school house in Brampton. After marrying Don and starting their family in Toronto, they moved to California in 1958 where Don, having completed his Chemistry PhD, began his career at the California Institute of Technology. During their seven year stay, Jackie enjoyed all the adventures of Southern California life. They returned to Canada when Don accepted an academic position at the University of Waterloo. Jackie and family then settled into a new home in Kitchener. Always seeking new experiences, she took a bold step later in life by going back to university to complete a psychology degree. Afterwards she enjoyed working at the University of Waterloo Library until her retirement.
Jackie led an active and fulfilled life meeting people and making new friends. She enjoyed book clubs, church activities, women’s groups, volunteering, exercise groups and travel with family and friends to interesting and adventuresome places.
Due to declining health in the last few years Jackie moved to a retirement home and eventually to a nursing home near her son in Toronto.
Jackie will be missed by her immediate family, cousins, many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbours and former colleagues and remembered for her independence, outgoing personality and joy of life.
Cremation has taken place and a private time of remembrance will be held by the family.
