Uncle Louis was one of my dad's best friends who has passed away in December of 2020.
Like Ricky said he would just show up at the house or hospital to visit dad and G.  He would always call my mom Gee "G" for Gilda.  There's been many times l had to drive him home or call Marcia to let her know he was here.  One time l remember driving him home and his baseball hat blew out the window. It was so funny.  As l lay on my bed watching his funeral l look around and all l see is his handy work, not just my room but the whole basement.
Yes lam sure he's in a better place, in his best body busy visiting and reminiscing with old friends & family that he hasn't seen in awhile. Rest in peace Uncle Louis from the Masters . Ian Gilda Clinton Lloyd & Valerie.  God Bless.

Always welcoming and engaging, Mr. Daugherty was one of those personalities that put a smile on your face whenever you met with him. 

I would stop by for a quick hello and hours later find myself in a deeply engrossed in conversation. Time seem to stand still as I enjoyed the moment with a warm friendly and wise soul.

Humours with a subtle hint of sarcasm, Mr Daugherty possess that wonderful charm of the Jamaican's of his generation. I looked forward to our conversations every time we met.

His love for his daughter and grandchildren was always on display. While stoic, you could see his tender love for them in his eyes.

He will always live on in our memory and will be missed


My Dearest Gramps🤍 I don’t know which Memory to choose from. I would start off with my favourite when you lived at your apartment in Malton.  Arri and I would always be touching your stuff and moving it around 🤣 this day we were using team work to sneak ice cream out of the freezer. You were sitting on the couch and I was on your lap covering your eyes as if we were going to play hide and seek so she could sneak the ice cream out. I counted slowly to 5 or 10 quickly checking to make sure you were not peeking. By the time I was done counting and arri got the ice cream I took my hands off your face and Boom. Sleeping 😴 🤍 I love you so much Gramps it breaks my heart you did not remember everyone towards the end. What we have are all of our beautiful memories and the loved ones that are close and dear to our hearts to lean on while your gone. Arri and I will never forget you gramps you were our rock, our support our gramps our dad our everything 🥺 I would always say “I love you Gramps” it was always ‘Likewise Daughta’ I eventually would ask you in my teenage years why you would never say ‘I Love You Too’ he would explain to me how he feels without needing to say it. Saying the words was not your love language, but showing it in other ways was. Whether it be feeding someone, or building something for someone, or buying a suit/dress for the kids, just making sure everyone around him was good and coming through anyway he could for the people he cared about. I always knew your upbringing was a rough sad one Gramps, you never got the love you deserved but still showed it. By the end that’s where your mind took you back to walking from Kingston to Montego Bay as a Young Boy, Alone. Grandpa You were and always will be loved, we were there by your side every step of the way just like you were for us. Aunty did such an amazing job taking care of you and I know she’s crushed but I will tell her ‘Nuh Worry about It’ Your memory lives on with the Family My Dearest Grandpa Louis 🤍🤍

Lou knew a lot about me, things that I later came to realize. My first recollection of Lou was when he and May came to live with us at 64 Saint John’s Avenue. I remember the room upstairs where they lived. Lou always had the paraffin heater glowing bright.
I think I was about 11 years old when I said to Lou, why are you calling me Hughie, that’s not my name. He made me realize that it was, that Hugh is my middle name—wow, little did I know! 
Lou never left us out. Over the many years, I recalled Lou repairing our broken chairs. Lou spent many long hours renovating our basement at Silverspring Crescent as I recalled fetching him this and fetching him that.  My dad—Ian Masters—and Lou were like brothers.  Ian could always rely and confide with almost everything with him. 
Yes, Lou never left us out. Lou when he lived in Mississauga would visit my home and sometimes stay for the Bible studies that my wife, Joan Ann, would organize.  
I knew Lou to be a generous man. When we were packing to move to Alberta, Lou was so determined to travel with us so that he could help us drive our U-Haul truck and get us there safely. Wow, what a guy he was!
I would look Lou up or call him whenever I returned to Ontario, just to see how he was doing. He was always glad to see me—Howie or Hughie he would say.
Lou, you will be missed.

I first met Louis in London England  in 1961 at the home  of Ian Masters. We became friends and shared many laughs. I also became  Louis barber. He  always liked to look nice ,so we saw each other regularly.  We both moved away from England in the early  70's. It was a wonderful surprise when I once again met Louis after moving to Kitchener. Oh Dad, which memory do I share? There are so many precious moments that have been strung together like pearls on a string which made something beautiful that I can now touch and hold. You were a character. The amount of times I would just bust out and laugh at the things you did and said.  Like how you would go to the freezer break off a piece of hard dough bread and eat it just like that frozen or the time you took us to the drive-in movie place. All five of us piled in the Chevy Caprice and off we went. We watched several movies that night from vampires to swashbuckling pirates. The memory that I will share is this, there was a time where my Dad was the go to guy for any basement that people wanted to fix up because he was a carpenter. I am the oldest so I became his apprentice. Whenever my Dad got a job he would take me along. He would put his tam on my head to keep the dust out of my hair and eyes as we worked. We did many homes together. At that time I  learned how to hammer in nails, screw in screws. To this day I  can do little things myself. Several years later a friend invited me over to their place. Upon entering the house I recognized it as one my Dad and I had done some work. I said, "Hey, I remember this place. My Dad and I did some work here." Then with eyes bugging out my friend's brother looked at me and said, "That was you in the tam?" I  said, "Yes." He said, "I  thought you were a boy."

Where do I start. My grandpa was my whole heart. I’ll never forget when I went and got my G license and he was so proud of me. I had no idea and one day my grandpa came into town with a car for me. He said “ now you must be safe when your driving you drive with your ears” I just thought he was telling me some other Jamaican riddle. As am older now I understand completely. When Taij and I were younger we spent most weekends with him in Mississauga, and one weekend we wanted to pull a trick on him so we hid all his change he had in a jar. And we put it his microwave he wasn’t using. Well we forgot all about it and went home. Grandpa calls our mom saying “ Carol where the kids dem put my money” We obviously told our mom. The next visit we were banned from his change jar.  Grandpa loved Karmell so much and Zamari, always trying to feed them as babies.  My grandpa loved his food he always knew the spots to go and eat out in Mississauga. It’s because of him I know good oxtail. All three of us would go for walks in his favorite mall in Malton and oh my could my grandpa chat. Everyone knew my grandpa. He would stop and chat to everyone always proud when the boys and I was with him saying “yes this is my sweetheart” “ the only lady in his life”.  He was truly the father that Taij and I never had growing up, we learned so much from him and I’ll continue to use all of what he had taught us. I Love you grandpa and I can hear him say “Like wise daughta” 

To the Daugherty family.  I must convey my heartfelt condolences.  As you mourn the patriarch of your family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.  Please know that although time may seem to erode our loved ones from our lives, memories will always survive.  He spoke so fondly of his family.
I wish to share an English jokey phrase that your father and I would use when dealing with chatty people.  "Skip to the end."

It's weird not having you in the house Grandpa. I often turn the corner into the kitchen expecting to see you getting your glass of water or morning tea and being greeted with a "hey daughta", only to have reality remind me you're no longer with us, but at peace now.

Most of my memories of you involve you whisking me away to visit friends or enjoy some time at your favourite local spot always asking "Do you know who this is? This be my first grandchild" you were always a proud Grandpa.

You were always so kind to your Great-Grandson Zakery. I will always be appreciative that you would humbly and proudly contribute to his savings. I knew Zak loved to play with his toys in Great-Grandpa's room, often finding him with his trucks while you sat on your bed and calmly watched him play.

The family and I will miss you dearly, but will always have the wonderful memories of you. Love you Grandpa.

It's very strange not having you at the house, grandpa. I remember when you left the house once and I spotted you on Fairway Road.  Sorry, but had to let mom know.

I'm sad that you're gone, grandpa but believe you're in a better place with no more pain.  I'll miss when you'd see me and say, "Hey my man! What's up".

Thank you grandpa for always showing kindness to us. I will definitely miss your Jamaican accent!!

As I sit in your room, dad, I can't believe you're gone. We had some funny moments, such as when I took you to your eye appointment and the doctor gave you the throwaway glasses. You felt the need to wear them ALL the time! Or when I caught you trying to hide food up your sleeve.  Didn't matter what it was - chips, muffins, bread.  I must confess your grandchildren ratted you out every time.

You were clever though. Could get yourself dressed, head downtown to the go-station, and hop a bus to Toronto. I was so frightened you'd get lost but you found your way home every time ... clean-shaven, gray gone, and a fresh manicure.

Rainbows Caribbean Cuisine became your favorite place to eat. You'd enjoy a hot bowl of medium soup and two fried dumplings. The staff knew you well. They even put me on speed dial and called when you arrived (day or night). 

I'll miss our talks, dad about Jamaica, and life in general. You sounded happy reminiscing about immigrating to England by ship, bathing at the seaside, and relaying wise words of wisdom like live peacefully with people.

Even though you didn't recognize or remember people during the latter part of your life, you always asked about your children.  You'd say, "Do I have kids"? I'd reply, "Yes, five of us". To which you'd respond, "You kidding!! Your response always made me smile. 

I'm forever grateful for the time we had, dad. We laughed, cried, and sometimes, didn't see things eye to eye. But through it all, I knew you loved me. You taught me life is sometimes unfair but it's what you do with it, that makes the difference.

I'll miss you terribly...
