

Mel was born September 12,1933 in Salem, Ontario to parents Richard and Myrtle Kitchen. He was predeceased by his parents as well as siblings Jean Robertson, Murray Kitchen, Audrey Rivers, Merle Miehm and Barry Kitchen.
Mel was married almost 59 years to Carmella (nee Curtis), who predeceased him in 2013.
Mel was the much-loved father of Richard Kitchen (Laurie), Debra Kitchen, Carolyn Thomas and Lori Rose. He was a special Papa to 11 grandchildren; Jeremy Martin (Ilaina), Amee Martin (Darrell), Chris Costa, Jeffery Martin (Kelly), Angela VanKoughnett (John), Philip Rose, Michael Kitchen (Cynthia), Theresa Rowe, Emily Balsillie (John), Stephen Kitchen (Katie) and Benjamin Kitchen (Kelly). He was the proud Great Papa to 18 great-grandchildren; Aurora, Lukah, Peyton, Sophie, Phoenix, Theo, Quinn, Isla, Sasha, Oliver, Alex, Harvey, Charlotte, Lathan, Delaney, Mackenzie, Jasper, and Ada. Also remembered by his wonderful friend Gwynne Redford.
Mel’s working life was mostly spent at Boehmer Box and at Koch Transport. He was a country music singer and guitar player who entertained many in KW and surrounding areas throughout his life. Most recently he played for the KW Seniors Day Program and was still playing gigs until October of 2025.
He was an avid sports fan, particularly supporting the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Kitchener Rangers.

Visitation with his family will be held at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, on Thursday January 22, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:15 pm, with the funeral service to immediately follow at 2:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, or Hospice Waterloo Region.
