Our dear wife, wonderful mother and grandmother, Ruth Marie Guthrie passed away quietly on January 28, 2015 in her 90th year, following a brief illness. She had a long life filled with laughter, love and optimism in the face of challenge. Ruth taught at Forest Heights Collegiate from its opening year (1964) until her retirement in 1987. At various stages in her active life, she was into designer sewing, raising exotic birds and prolific quilt making. Ruth loved to travel, exercise, and create elaborate stitchery projects. She was never happier than in the company of family and friends, celebrating a holiday or birthday, or supporting others and contributing to the work of the church. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, and convened the prayer group for many years. She also took great joy in her community of travel friends and eagerly anticipated each new venture. Ruth is deeply mourned by her husband Alex, daughters Gwen McCutcheon and Holly Taylor (Robert) and her grandchildren Dean, Bruce (Colleen), Helen (Aron), Dan and Elizabeth. She will be greatly missed by her step- children Elaine (John), Stephen (Joanne), Trevor (Sibylle) and Laura (Mark), and is predeceased by her sister Elizabeth Smith. Ruth’s Family will receive friends at the Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (54 Queen St. N.) on Wednesday, February 4, at 11:00 a.m. As expressions of sympathy a donation to the Lupus Foundation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church would be greatly appreciated.
