Tim, you are a great, world-class, talented guy.  Now I know where you got it.  My sincerest condolences.

This is Jack Eaton's son Tim. I regret being unable to join you all today to
remember my Father, so my daughter Amanda will relay these few brief
words of remembrances for me.

As I imagine for most of you a flood of memories comes rushing to mind
as we recall my remarkable father. The pictures on the memorial
website brought many back that reminded me that hey, sometimes I was
even there.

From a young age I learned that Dad worked hard and took extremely
great pride in doing precise and demanding work as a Draftsman over a
full career at “The Forge”.  While there he became an adept
practitioner of devising variations of an apparatus called “the
aroundtuit” – which for some odd & unfortunate reason never quite came
to be made.

Being “a Draughtsman whose discipline was to compose plans” somehow
seems to me to have informed how he organized how he both worked &
played.

It became a disciplined ritual to pack our car and head out camping
starting as soon as possible on each weekend every year.  Over time we
graduated from leaky surplus army tents to the pride of our travels, a
Rainbow brand pop-up trailer made in St Jacobs. And not to forget our
family boat -
the “4 E's”, that reliably took us on excursions to empty beaches away
from the crowds on Georgian Bay.

The first image I see when I think of Dad is from a home movie on one
of our trips to Honey Harbor. Mom for once has the movie camera and
the shot is of us leaving a cabin we'd rented. It must have been too
early or late in the year for a tent. Dad locks the door then turns
with a huge wide grin like he's on the top of the world. He still has
some thick black hair and is wearing a cool leather jacket & scarf. He
makes some good-natured swipes as he passes Mom with the camera as he
heads to the car.

The next memory I have is of an early morning with the sun sending
shafts of light through the trees from the East. Dad & I are silently
stalking along a small trout stream in the woods at Inverhuron Park -
back when it still had parts of a pioneer wilderness. We came to a
bend at the bottom of a small rapids where there was a quiet pool.
Dad gestured for me to cast my line and before you know it there's a
hit by a good size rainbow trout. It jumped up and arced through the
air, caught in a ray of sunlight then is gone.  No matter - the moment
was amazing and I still see it like it was yesterday.

Moments like these come to mind in quick succession as I build a
history of our family life with dad.

We often went to towns like Southampton & Kincardine and at one store
Mom fell in love with a table lamp.  After a few weeks we went back
and bought it.  Soon after Mom was vacuuming and I tripped on a cord
and the lamp came crashing down - shattering into bits.  This caused a
bit of a furor but after the dust settled the next thing I knew Dad
had all of the pieces on a bench in the basement and was patiently
gluing them back together like a jigsaw puzzle. I got tired but he
just kept on methodically working away. In the end the lamp was whole
again & had a kind of enhanced rustic look to it.

Next came the cottage on Lake Huron at Kintail which became a great
source for rest and relaxation, and from which also sprouted Dad's
interest in antiquing. The “This and That Shop” at Amberly was a fun
little enterprise that gave him great pleasure to have.

Over the years after I moved West parents would often visit and had a
chance to see my children grow up, for which we are grateful
especially when they could attend any of the stage shows in which
Amanda performed or sports events with Alex.

In the end the abiding passion in Dad's life was for his lovely bride
Margaret Timm.  As she told me, he left her behind a folded paper
airplane on which he wrote “I love you Marg”.

He left me with a rainbow flash in a pool in a stream in the woods in the sun.

I'd like to acknowledge my sister Wendie's support for my parents and
for being with him at the last, and also to my Aunt Helen, and to my
parents' extended family in the St Andrew's congregation who have
provided endless respite in their times of need.

I can only continue to aspire to the attain the quality of character
which my father Jack Eaton embodied, may his kind soul rest in the
peace he deserves.

Our condolences to Margaret and to Wendie and Tim and their families. We were fortunate enough to spend time with Jack on a number of occasions. We loved to listen to his interesting stories about his collections, adventures and family. It was clear that he was a devoted husband and father. Rest in Peace, Jack.
