Betty Gunter Vaughan’s body gave out on Thursday, June 29th around 8:30 PM. Melinda, her daughter, was holding her hand as Betty’s spirit left peacefully to begin her next Big Adventure.Betty was born on January 25th, 1929 in Greensboro, NC; she was 88 years old. However, by her account she stopped aging at 16. According to Betty, “if you don’t have Birthdays, you don’t get older”. She graduated from Greensboro HS and married William (Bill) Vaughan on July 17, 1948. During the course of their marriage Betty and Bill lived in several places moving as needed for Bill’s job as Sales Manager for Dow Chemical. They lived the longest in Knoxville, TN and retired there. They also lived in several cities in NC, Garland, TX and Marietta, GA. Bill and Betty were married 69 years before Bill proceeded her in death a little over 3 months ago, March 19, 2017. Now they are together again forever. She was the devoted daughter of the late James Earl Gunter and Vera Rose Stanton. Betty had 9 siblings;, Rose Ellen Needham (Lester Floyd), James Earl Gunter, Jr. (Louise), Violet Marie Conner (Ervin), Jack Fulton Gunter (Veronica), Fern Louise Thorpe, Dewey Stanton Gunter (Barbara), Mary Etta Ann Maness (Roy), Genevieve “Jenny” Moore Carroll (Jim) and Marie Moore Fletcher (Wesley). Betty and Bill had 3 children. 2 sons, Randy Vaughan (Kathi) of Knoxville; Greg Vaughan (Leigh) of Atlanta, GA and 1 daughter Melinda V Petruzzi (Bob) of Columbia, SC. 5 grandchildren, Robert, Bill, Sara, Reddick and Gregory. 6 great grand children,, Reese, Alex, Jameson, Caroline, Lillian and Peyton. Betty loved life. She enjoyed reading, shell collecting and spending time with family. Betty was always positive. She’d say “ I don’t worry, worry will age you”, and sing “Que Sey-la (as she’d say) Sey-la, whatever will be, will be”. She had a way of moving thru life with quick short steps and purpose. Always rebounding to come home and keep Bill in line. God shared Betty Gunter Vaughan with us long after we were told her heart was weak and had little chance. It was a gift to know her. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 5:30 on Wednesday July 5th at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home, 2300 Adair Drive, Knoxville. There will be a short service at 5:30 before committal around 6:00. Condolences may be offered at www.berrylynnhurst.com
