Ernest "Ernie" Edward McGill

Ernest "Ernie" Edward McGill, age 92, of Knoxville, Tennessee went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 31, 2025. He was the oldest son and one of 10 siblings. Ernie married Ruth Ellen Ramsey in October of 1950. They moved to Knoxville in 1954 and had 4 children.

They joined Kim Watt Baptist Church in 1954 where Ernie became and remained a Deacon. In later years, he attended Dutch Valley Baptist Church. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with the Burlington Lodge and a member of the Kerbela Shriners. Ernie enjoyed singing for the Lord, serving his God, and helping others. Laughing with his friends, family gatherings, golf, bowling, hunting, and horseshoes rounded out his favorite pastimes.

Ernest McGill was the patriarch of our family who instilled in us our values, not by words but by example. He will forever be in our hearts and daily lives as we strive to walk in his footsteps. May he now rest in Heavenly peace.

Ernie spent his working career as an over the road truck driver and was awarded 2 rings, each one of them was for a million mile safe driving record. He retired from Toms Foods after 33 years of dedicated service.

Ernie was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Ruth Ellen Ramsey McGill; parents, David and Wilma McGill; grandson, Eric McGill; siblings, David, Andy, and Harvey McGill, Barbara and Diane Hitch, and Evelyn Nichols.

He is survived by children, Darlene (Austin) Moore, Gary McGill, Judy (Ron) Lee; Glen (Janet) McGill; grandchildren, Kevin (Aundrea) Johnson, Christian (Michelle) Johnson, Tracy (James) Kelly, Adam Arnold, Emily (Trevor) Gerardine; great grandchildren, Rachel and Caleb Johnson, Taylor and Michael Johnson, Kayla, Laurel, and Emory Arnold, Wyatt Headrick, Caitlyn, Austin, and Dylan Manley and Everly Gerardine; sisters, Helen Phelps, Bess Brown and Alice Cowan; several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends Thursday, February 6th from 5-7pm at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home with funeral service following at 7pm. Rev. Charlie Reynolds officiating. Family and friends will meet Friday, February 7th at 12:45pm at Clarks Grove Cemetery, 3217 Williams Mill Road, Maryville, TN 37804 for a 1pm graveside service.
