

John Ray Durliat, 72, passed away on November 1, 2024, in Knoxville, TN. John was born on January 31, 1952, in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1970. John began his career as a cinema projectionist at the age of 16 at the Portage Drive-In and worked his way through the movie theater industry to being the Director of Quality Assurance at Regal Entertainment Group. During John's career journey, he was a part owner of Cinema Techniques from 1978 to 1990 then began working for National Cinema Supplies and later became the Senior Director of Quality Assurance at Regal Entertainment Group, where he retired in 2012. John also was credited as Daily Projectionist on the films "Little Man Tate" and "A Rage in Harlem." John also was the recipient of many awards and various certificates of recognition within the industry during his entire career.
In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Together with his wife, Brenda, whom he was married to for 46 years, he enjoyed scuba diving, traveling, attending Jimmy Buffet concerts, and experiencing the thrill of NASCAR races. John's jovial personality made him the life of the party, whether it was at dinner with friends or during Sunday gatherings with his family.
John was a devoted family man, described by his wife as a warm and loving husband and by his children as the best father one could ask for. He leaves behind his wife, Brenda; children, Elena (Steve) Legg, Michelle (Don) Langford, and Hayes Martin (Tarah) Durliat; grandchildren, Johnathan (Veronica) King, Alli (Justin) Mash, Chance Durliat, Hayden Durliat, and Jena Kay Durliat; and great-grandchildren, Noahh Edwards, Kennedy Mash, and Asher Mash. He is also survived by nine siblings, James R. Detrick Jr, Dedra Detrick, Judy Donavan, Diana Frey, Pamela Bauer, Brenda Stelter, Jana Detrick, Bill Detrick, and Steve Clark. John also leaves behind too many friends to list.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Hayes Mac Durliat and Edna Durliat, and his sisters, Shirley Busdecker and Gayle Holste.
Family will receive friends Saturday, November 16th from 12-3pm with a memorial service for Father and Son to follow at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home with Bishop Earl Stinson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Tennessee Kidney Foundation or Tennessee Donor Services, honoring his generous spirit and his commitment to helping others. John's legacy of love, mentorship, and community involvement will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
