Mary S. Cowden

Cowden, Mary S., age 89, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully at home February 17, 2015. She was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Grainger County. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl A. Cowden; parents, William (Bill) and Gertie Shelton; five brothers, J. F. (Jay), Sydney, Leo, Lester and Clyde; two sisters, Ruth Baker and Hazel Sharp. Mary is survived by her sisters, Nada Lay, Pauline Harrell and Lucille Shelton, all of Grainger County; two nieces, Pat Majors and Sharon Cox; three nephews, Jerry Sharp, Stephen Lay, and Duane Harrell, and several great nieces and great nephews as well as great-great nieces and great-great nephews. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to caregivers Tracey, Kara and Tish as well as the attending staff of UT Medical Center Hospice Services. Mary enjoyed the many friendships made during her years of service as a decorator for S. H. Kress & Co. and as office manager at Standard Knitting Mills where she retired. The family will receive friends at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home, 2300 Adair Dr. from 4pm – 6pm Saturday with the funeral to follow at 6 pm with Rev. Colin Scearce and Rev. Travis Proffitt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Hill Cemetery, 203 Elm Springs Rd., Washburn, TN 37888.
