Peggy Lou Jones graduated to the next level of life and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 15, 2018 at age 68. As a Christian, this is the day she had been waiting for and she went with confidence and without fear. Her final wish was granted as she passed with all 3 of her kids by her side.
Peggy was born in LaFollette, TN and moved to Powell, TN where she raised her family and lived for over 40 years. In 2015, she moved to North Knoxville where she spent her final days in a condo she purchased and loved.
Peggy was an only child and is preceded in death by her daughter, Shanna Jones, and her mother and father, Gladys and Willie Woods.
First and foremost Peggy was a mother and grandmother who valued family. She always said she was born to be a mother. She started her family in 1966 when she gave birth to her first daughter, Becky. Her family grew in 1970 with her second daughter, Susan, again in 1971 with her 3rd daughter, Shanna, who passed away shortly after birth, and finally in 1979 when she brought Justin into the family.
She was a dedicated mother to Becky Clabough (husband, Mark Clabough), Susan Meridieth (husband, Mike Meridieth), Shanna Jones and Justin Jones. She was a loving grandmother, or as she liked to be called “Nanny,” to Whitney Evans (husband, Daniel Evans) and Will Barnes (wife, Lauren Barnes) and a great grandmother to Claire and Evan Barnes. Peggy was married from 1965 to 2015.
She loved God, her family, gardening and Elvis Presley. She was known for her willingness to give and help family and friends who needed it. She loved to travel, spend time in her garden and most of all, spend time with family. Later in life, she was able to travel and experience new places with the people she loved.
She was frugal with her money, a trait she learned from her father, Willie Woods, who was known to get a deal on anything to save money. At times, she was seen wearing old clothes with holes to make sure her kids had what they needed and wanted.
Before her first battle with cancer in 1997, Peggy was a beautician and owned her own business. She was in remission for many years, but would later battle it 3 more times. It was rare for her to complain, so many people may not even know she was sick. Throughout her fight, her smile, her love for her family and her love for the Lord never changed.
In her final hours, she found peace in the scripture 2 Corinthians 4:16-18. It reads, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
The family will receive friends and family from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Callahan Road Baptist Church located at 1317 Callahan Drive, Knoxville, TN 37912. A funeral service will follow. Graveside service will be 11 am Saturday at Bakers Forge Cemetery located at 732 Demory Road, LaFollette, TN 37766. Condolences may be offered at www.berrylynnhurst.com
