

Sherwood Dwight Skinner, 82, of Knoxville, Tennessee, quietly slipped away, Monday, February 25, 2013, at his home. Sherwood was born on August 11, 1930 in Wilson, North Carolina to Daisy and Bruce Skinner. He graduated high school an entered the Air Force serving from October 1948 to August 1952. Following his service he attended and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). On September 13, 1957 he married the former Charlotte Virginia Milton (deceased). Sherwood was an Agricultural Engineer and worked for Tennessee Valley Authority for over 30 years. Upon retirement he spent his time volunteering with Mended Hearts, participating in various church activities, and traveling. He was a member of Bookwalter United Methodist Church in Knoxville; he enjoyed singing in the church choir all his life.
Sherwood is survived by his two children, Gail Skinner Hart and husband Reid Hart of Cocoa, Florida and Steve Skinner of Knoxville; step-grandson Joshua Hart, great grand-daughter Kira Hart also from Florida, sister-in-law Diane Milton Hancock from Dunedin, Florida, and brother Alton Skinner from Emporia, Virginia. Nieces and nephews include Wendy Southern and Cindy Stanley from Georgia, Rhonda Newton from North Carolina, Bruce Skinner from North Carolina, and Barry Skinner from Virginia.
A celebration of Sherwood’s life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3rd at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel, 2300 Adair Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37918. Dr. David A. Lord will be officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation at the funeral home from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday preceding the Memorial Service. The burial service will take place at 9:30 a.m., Monday, March 4th at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 5901 Lyon’s View Pk., Knoxville, TN 37919.
