

Dr. Susan "Suzie" Baker Farmer, age 71, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2025. She was a former member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and Central Baptist Church. Susan married John T. Farmer, Jr. on Halloween in 1981. She earned her PhD in Botany from the University of Tennessee Knoxville, 2007. Susan was a member of The Order of the Velvet Owl, an award given in the SCA for excellence in the arts. She had eight academic publications and her work has been sited over two thousand times to date. Susan was a Biology Professor at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College from 2007-2015; Graduate Student of University of Tennessee Knoxville Biology Department from 1994-2006, and a Computer Programmer for JBF Associates in the 1970's to 1987.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, Richard A. Baker; father-in-law, John T. Farmer, Sr.; mother-in-law, Elsie C. Farmer. She is survived by husband, John T. Farmer, Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Stephanie M. Farmer; mother, Margaret Ann Baker; uncle, Henry Watkins; seven cats, Spot, Thor, Anna, Inky, Callie, Cassie, and Smoke; "The Baker Bunch" as she called her cousins, aunts and uncles; mentor, Mary Fulham; heart sister, Martha Knowles, and others in the Society for Creative Anachronism; lifelong friends, Sarah Noble and Dru Meyers; and the many, many people whose lives she touched as a teacher and professor.
The family would like to give special "Thanks" to the UT Medical Center 9th Floor and 6th Floor ICU nursing staff for making her comfortable in her last days.
Family will receive friends Saturday, January 18th from 12-2pm with funeral service at 2pm at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home. Graveside service will immediately follow at Lynnhurst Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Alan Price officiating. Reception for friends and family will take place after the graveside service. Flowers are welcome with the exception of carnations; however, if you feel so lead, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage at www.wildflowerpilgrimage.org, Southern Appalachian Botanical Society at www.castaneajournal.com, the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory at www.dlia.org or the Friends of the Smokies at www.friendsofthesmokies.org.
