Sylvia was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, but above all, she was an artist. Her life was shaped by an extraordinary imagination, a deep curiosity about the world, and an abiding love for the people around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. James and Jamie Blankenship, and by her true love and soulmate, Charles Edward Williams Jr., whom she first met in 1970 in art class at Central High School. Their love began over paint brushes at a classroom sink and continued for nearly 48 years of marriage. Charles's death in 2021 left an immeasurable space in her life, but the love they shared remained a defining part of who she was.
Sylvia was a proud Central Bobcat and was honored as a member of the Central High School Hall of Fame, an achievement that meant a great deal to her. Her love for art and for her community led her to help create the Fountain City Art Center, an institution she cared deeply about. In a fitting tribute to her life and legacy, the center was recently renamed the Sylvia Williams Art Center.
She went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Tennessee. Her curiosity and love of learning also carried her far beyond Knoxville. Sylvia lived in France, where she immersed herself in the language and culture and learned to speak French beautifully.
But Sylvia's greatest gift was her art. She was a brilliant artist whose creativity could not be confined to one medium or one style. She saw the world differently and had a remarkable ability to translate what she saw, imagined, and felt into her work. Art was not simply something she did; it was part of who she was.
Sylvia leaves behind her devoted children, Charles Edward Williams III and Olivia Williams Shuirr; her son-in-law, Ian Shuirr; and her beloved grandchildren, Liam, Soleil, and Luna. She is also survived by her sister and best friend, Marie Shelter (H.C.); her brothers, Bruce (Mandy) Blankenship and James Blankenship; her brother-in-law, David Williams; and many other family members, friends, students, and members of the artistic community whose lives she touched. The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Ken and Cat Clayton who devoted many hours to the care and wellbeing of our mother.
Sylvia will be remembered for her remarkable talent, her intelligence, her adventurous spirit, her love of learning, and, most of all, for the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. She leaves behind a body of work that will continue to speak in her voice, and a family who will carry her love and memory forward.
She is now reunited with the person she loved most, and we hope they are once again finding excuses to wash paint brushes at the same sink.
Family and friends will gather at Berry Lynnhurst Cemetery, 2300 Adair Dr., Knoxville, TN 37918, on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 1:00pm to honor the life and legacy of Sylvia.
