Vernon met his first wife at a high school football game and they married in 1948. They opened a burger stand in Maryville, TN where he cooked his famous Vernie Burgers. He retired at 50, moved to Sevierville, TN from Southern CA. He built his own home with resources from his land. His talents as a craftsman allowed him to do this.
