What a perfect ending to a lifelong love story.
Paul Douglas Ballard, born September 15, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, graduated from this life to Heaven on October 1, 2026, where he was reunited with his lifelong sweetheart, best friend, and devoted wife, Carol Joyce Ballard. Paul and Carol's love story began when they were just 15 years old. From those early years, they shared a special love for horses, a passion that became part of the story of their life together. Their love of horses was just one of the many things that drew them together as teenagers and remained a shared interest throughout their lives. For more than 70 years, Paul and Carol shared a remarkable journey together first as young sweethearts, then as husband and wife, parents, grandparents, and lifelong companions. They truly grew up together, built a life together, raised a family together, and grew old together. After Carol went home to be with the Lord on July 3, 2026, Paul experienced another profound loss just a little more than two months later when his beloved younger brother, Charles A. “Corky” Ballard, passed away on September 11, 2026. In the span of only a few months, Paul said goodbye to two people who had been part of nearly his entire life the woman he had loved since he was 15 years old and his little brother. Those losses left an emptiness that could never truly be filled. And yet, even in our grief, there is something deeply comforting about imagining that reunion. Although we will miss Paul more than words can express, there is tremendous comfort in knowing that their separation was brief. The two young people who fell in love as teenagers, shared a love for horses, built a life and family together, and grew old side by side are together once again. What a beautiful ending to an extraordinary love story and what a beautiful reunion it must have been. Paul lived a life centered around family, education, hard work, and a lifelong desire to learn. He was a wonderful example of what it means to be a lifelong learner. Paul was born with dyslexia, but he never allowed it to become an excuse or define what he could accomplish. Instead, he became an avid reader and pursued knowledge throughout his life. That determination carried Paul from his early education into a successful career as a business executive and later as an educator. His passion for learning was reflected in his own academic achievements. He earned undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and ultimately earned a Ph.D. in Science. Yet for all his professional and educational accomplishments, Paul’s greatest investment was never in a career, a title, or a degree. It was his family. Paul lived a life focused on those he loved. He was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend. His family was the center of his world, and the life he built with Carol became the legacy they leave behind. Paul is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Eric Ballard and Amanda Ballard, and David Jason Ballard and Analaura Ballard; and his three beloved granddaughters, Mallorie, Emelia, and Isabella. Paul's life reminds us that obstacles do not have to determine our destination, that education never truly ends, that family is worth investing a lifetime in, and that genuine love can endure through every season of life. For more than seven decades, Paul loved Carol. For just few days, they were apart. The young couple who began their journey more than 70 years ago with a shared love for each other, their family, and even their horses have finished their earthly journey together.
What began as a teenage love story has become an eternal one.
