Virgilio Mendiola Hinojosa passed away peacefully on Friday, November 11, 2022. He was born on November 2, 1937 to Gregorio Hinojosa, Sr. and Amalia Mendiola Hinojosa in Rancho Santarita Jimenez, Tamaulipas, Mexico
Virgilio came to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 12. He started working on shrimp boats in Port Isabel around that same time. He started working at Alberti Seafoods in Harlingen as a member of the night time clean up crew. Eventually, he ran the Harlingen Plant as the operations manager and even opened shrimp processing plants in Mexico. While working at Alberti Seafoods in Harlingen Virgilio met his future wife, Maria Delia Barrera Garcia. Virgilio and Maria were married in 1955 and were blessed to celebrate 67 years of marriage.
After 22 years, Virgilio retired from Alberti Seafoods and began his construction business in 1970-71. He partnered with Sam Rodeo in McAllen, TX to develop lease spaces at La Plaza Mall and many other commercial properties along Nolana St. He became a Licensed General Contractor and started his own construction company, thus Virgil Hinojosa Construction was created, building custom homes and medical offices around Valley Baptist Medical Center, Treasure Hills Country Club, Stonepine subdivision and many other areas of Harlingen and surrounding communities. In 1980, he built his 3 story dream home in Treasure Hills where his dream was for all his family to someday live together. During his construction tenure, he opened Poorboy Lumber and Building Supply in Combes, TX and later a second location in McAllen, TX on N 23rd St. In1990 Virgilio became a US Citizen as he felt his voice in electoral races needed to be heard.
