Ellen King Perkins of La Grange passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023. Ellen was a devoted mother to Sydney (age 20) and wife to Mike for 21 years.
Ellen graduated from Oldham County High School in 1982 and went on to study art and business at Bellarmine University, graduating in 1986. Her love for people and cooking led her into the food and hospitality industry in establishments such as Jack Fry’s, Azalea, KT’s, and Wild Basil Catering.
Ellen loved her hometown, La Grange, and returned home when she and Mike married and were ready to raise Sydney. Her passion for reading was fed by her love of working at Karen’s Book Barn. When Halloween was approaching, she knew the Ghost Tour Duties were calling. She always had a flare for drama, dancing, painting and crafting. As Sydney traveled through the Oldham County School system, Ellen’s added passion became a “field hockey Mom” as Syd excelled in the sport. Her natural leadership was an asset to Syd’s sports interest while in school.
Besides family, her biggest love was cooking and generously sharing the fruits of her labor. She was a wonderful listener using her heart to hear. Ellen shared her helping hands, warm thoughts and love with so many. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Edward Perkins; daughter, Sydney Michel Perkins; her father, James R. King; and brother, Richard Lee King. She will be missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and family friend, Nicole Brown-Lewis. Ellen is predeceased by her mother, Nanette Atkinson King and sister, Julie Dawn King; her grandparents, James Oliver and Birdie Margaret King; and aunts, Nancy Lynn King and Hilda King Hamilton.
Visitation will be held from 12 – 2 p.m. with a memorial service following at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home in La Grange on Saturday, Aug. 12. Memorial contributions may go to the Kentucky Humane Society and American Heart Foundation.
