Coach Kleier was my biology teacher at Atherton High School. He was not only a good instructor, but a wonderful man who exemplified professionalism and made learning enjoyable and fun. On his birthday the year I had him for biology, classmate Cynthia Schaars and I presented him with a birthday cake with a frog on it. He was very gracious about our surprise celebration for him and sat down and enjoyed the cake with our class. We celebrated him that day because of who he was as a role model and a teacher. I will always cherish many fond memories of Coach Kleier.

Dear Bettie, Frank and Michael,
My deepest sympathies on Jack's passing. There have been few days since Atherton that I have not thought of something that reminds me of his caring influence -- on and off the field.

We were not just players to Jack. We were his maturing young men. He pushed us as we needed (“Run it again, Gawd dimmit!”), encouraged and laughed with us, appreciated us in victory and defeat -- “Don’t get your dauber down” -- whatever a dauber was. He drove me, a sophomore just relocated from near Chicago, home from summer two-a-days; would later take me on a college recruiting visit and even counsel me on my acne when no one else was around -- he talked to me about me.

He helped shape my character and the lives of hundreds of others who were students first, players second. It’s a debt never to be repaid, which he would never expect. Thank you for sharing Jack with the rest of us.

Be well,
Brian Weber

Over the past decade as principal of Atherton, I have had the honor to meet Coach Kleier several times and in my office still hangs a photo of us on the football field of the school stadium which bears his name. A gracious man, his memory lasts in the many students and staff whose lives he has impacted. As our school motto goes, Coach, what you have done with your life has made a difference in this world.
