John William Black

Born on May 15, 1952, in La Grange, John devoted his life to serving the community he loved. A man with a true servant’s heart, he faithfully served as Mayor of the City of La Grange and previously as Oldham County Judge-Executive. Throughout his many years of public service, John worked tirelessly to help shape La Grange into the wonderful community it is today. It is fitting that La Grange is known as the “Kindness Capital of Kentucky,” as John embodied that spirit through his kindness, integrity, and unwavering commitment to others. His service left a lasting impact on countless lives.

John was a devoted member of Southeast Christian Church, La Grange Campus. Those who attended church there were often greeted by his warm smile as he faithfully welcomed worshippers while serving as a parking attendant. John believed that every act of service, no matter how small, was an opportunity to share God’s love.

A man of many talents, John held a variety of roles throughout his life, including electrician, real estate agent, auctioneer, and bus driver for Oldham County Public Schools. He was known for being able to fix just about anything and was happiest tinkering in his garage, where his fondness for collecting “junk” often allowed him to transform forgotten treasures into something useful. John also enjoyed taking guitar lessons and had a deep appreciation for music.

Although his accomplishments were many, John’s greatest source of pride and joy was his family. He treasured every moment spent with those he loved and leaves behind a lifetime of memories that they will forever hold dear.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Harold E. Black and Ruth Trigg Black, and his brother, William Trigg Black.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Karen Black; his children, Josh Chalfant (Tricia) and Stephanie Quinlan (Jody); his treasured granddaughters, Holly Chalfant, Emily Chalfant, and Katie Quinlan; his sisters, MaryLee Voegele (David) and Barbara Sparks (Jim); his brother, Harold Black (Jodi); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends—as well as an entire community he deeply loved and faithfully served.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at Southeast Christian Church—La Grange Campus on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Valley of Rest Cemetery.

John’s legacy will not be measured solely by the offices he held or the work he accomplished, but by the countless lives he touched through his faith, kindness, and steadfast dedication to serving others. He made his family, his church, and his community better simply by being part of them, and his example of faithful service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
