Louis Arthur Whitmer, age 88, of Goshen, KY passed away on May 29, 2023 after a brief, but valiant fight against cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Judith; Children, Joan (Roland) Isaacs, Nancy Donner (Mark Kamer), Steve (Celeste), Janet (Pat) Conway, James, David, Daniel (Aimee) and 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his father and mother, Louis N. and Rosemary Whitmer, an infant daughter Barbara, a grandson Cory Isaacs and daughter in law, Carolyn Whitmer.
Louis grew up in the Chicago suburbs where he played high school football and excelled in academics. After college at the University of Illinois, he joined the Army as a radio operator and served overseas. When he completed his military service, he moved in 1964 to the Louisville area for work in the finance industry. He continued as an amateur ham radio operator and enjoyed talking with other operators all over the world, collecting cards and contacts from many countries. Louis entered the auto industry in 1968 and later owned his own dealership by 1976. He owned and operated for many years before selling the business to retire to Florida. After seven years in Florida, he and his wife returned to Oldham County, Kentucky to be closer to family. Louis enjoyed playing golf and exercising at the YMCA, where he would often strike up friendly conversations, always with a smile and quick wit.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Heady Radcliffe in Lagrange and will be private for family.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to conduct cancer research at the National Cancer Institute – see https://www.cancer.gov/about-nci/overview/contributing
