Marie M. Newbery, formerly Marie Naegelin, (b: September 30, 1931), passed away on May 17, 2026 under Palliative and Hosparus Care at Baptist Hospital Louisville. She was a resident of the Jersey shore for over eighty years, never residing more than 10 miles from her childhood home on Herbertsville Road in Point Pleasant, NJ. In 2016, after a fall, she moved to Kentucky to live with her son and daughter-in-law. Within a year she was fully recovered and had since lived an independent life in a garage apartment addition, built and attached to their home. In March 2026, during her daily visit to the local Post Office, she fell into an access door left open in the floor of the lobby and eventually succumbed to her injuries.
Always proud of her roots, her car in Kentucky prominently sported a JERSEY GIRL front license plate. Marie received all of her education in the Point Pleasant school system, and graduated in 1950 from Point Pleasant Beach High School. After the passing of her father, she became the primary provider for the family. She worked at Johnson’s Hardware until her first child was born, returning to work when he started school. Her next and final job was with the Borough of Belmar, from which she retired in 1996.
Marie met her future husband Charles Newbery while still in high school and waited for him while he served in the Korean War. Not long after receiving a Purple Heart and being discharged, Charles and Marie were married on February 7, 1953. They moved into a house on Thirteenth Ave in Belmar, NJ, where she lived until moving to Kentucky. Charles was killed in a car accident on the Garden State Parkway in 2001, as well as their two good friends John and Betty Cobb. Marie was the only survivor.
Marie and Charles enjoyed spending time with their two grandchildren, Mara and John. After Charles passed, Marie still made many trips to see her grandson play soccer and her granddaughter perform in musicals. She lived to see Mara achieve her dream of performing on Broadway and she is now an up-and-coming professional director/choreographer. John meanwhile played professional indoor soccer in Washington (the state) and now has earned his second university Head Women’s Soccer coaching position at Milligan University. Subsequently, Marie also enjoyed her time with her four great grandchildren Evie, Maggie, Gideon, and Maple.
Marie’s friends were numerous in New Jersey and she felt the pain of loss as many passed before her. In Kentucky she was involved in two luncheon groups, which she looked forward to every month. One group was the Upstreamers, and the other group ‘Lift’ is sponsored by Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Services.
Marie was predeceased by her husband Charles; her mother, Catherine Naegelin Wayte; her father, Marion Naegelin; her sister, Marian Naegelin Clark and Marian’s husband Albert Clark. Surviving family include her son, Jeff (Rosemary); grandchildren, Mara (Michael) Greer and John (Kaitlyn) Newbery; nephews, Christopher (Kristin) Clark, Michael (Dawn) Clark, Robert C (Randi) Newbery; niece Joyce (Peter) Bothner; great grandchildren, Evie, Maggie, Gideon, and Maple; grand nieces and nephews, Richard, Robert, Trinity, Ren, Damien, Kerstin and John.
Per her request there will be no public services in either Kentucky or New Jersey. She will be buried with her husband Charles in the BG Doyle Veterans Cemetery in New Jersey. A brief last farewell will be held at the Chapel. A memorial can be found at the Dignity Memorial website. For those who may want to do something in her honor, please donate to your church or favorite charity in her name. Thank you.
