With his loving family present, Richard Carlos Spears crossed peacefully from this side to Glory on Friday morning 15 July 2022. Richard was born in 1942 in Louisville, KY. He lived a life that took him to many corners of the US and parts of Europe, due to his military service and personal pursuit of happiness. A strong voice in person and song, for many years, Richard led worship services at Adair Assembly of God in Louisville. He was also called briefly as a minister, starting and pastoring a new church called Rise Again Assembly of God.
Richard took pride in his country, as well as his occupations involving security. Starting out in the army, he went on to work in the Jefferson County Public Schools, Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, Florida Department of Corrections and with a private security firm patrolling venues and other businesses.
More than all that, Richard loved his family near and far. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Joseph “Joey”; his parents, Carl and Stella Spears; brother, John Spears, and sisters, Bonnie Haynes and Carlene Hockenbury. Richard’s wife, Cheryl Spears passed in 2018. His ashes will be interred next to her grave at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Radcliff, KY near Fort Knox.
Richard is survived by his sister, Rita Davis and her husband, Burt; former spouse and mother of his children, Phyllis; sons, Richard “Ric” Jr. (Melissa), Curtis Spears (Alisia), and Steven Spears. Richard also loved and was loved by Cheryl’s children: Thomas Comstock, Jr., Kelly Turner and Christy Lassandro and many cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to your local veterans’ support organization in his memory.
