Alexis Andersen

Andersen - Alexis “Alex” Andersen, 73, Austin, left this earth on January 13, 2020 after a long illness. Born October 26, 1946 in a displaced persons camp in Bavaria, Germany, he and his family emigrated to the United States when he was three years old and settled in New Jersey. He was the son of the late Anna and Michael Andersen, and was predeceased by a sister, Irene, and a brother, Nicholas. His beloved late aunt, Elisabeth Omelchenko, was instrumental in helping raise him. Alex is survived by his partner of 50 years, Susana Hernandez, and two children, their spouses and one grandchild: Tania Hernandez-Andersen & Blake Holden; Daniel Andersen, Ashley Andersen & Sloan Andersen.

Alex lived as a free spirit. He enjoyed traveling, following the Grateful Dead in his youth, and living abroad for several years in Colombia, South America, a period in his life for which he had very fond memories. He loved the Jersey Shore, and he never met a deli or a diner that he didn’t like. In his later years, he and Susana settled in Austin, where they were embraced by many new friends. Family and friends recall him as a generous, gregarious raconteur who loved to tell a story (and often spin a yarn). He cherished his nieces and nephews and extended family. With friendships, he was loyal to a fault. He had a lifelong love of animals, especially dogs. He surrounded himself always with colorful characters and experiences and refused to do anything in a traditional or expected way.

A memorial service in celebration of Alex’s life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 411 Ranch Road 620 South, Lakeway, Texas, 78734. Flowers will be received at the funeral home, information can be found here.
