Carol was born on August 7, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, to Jake and Loretta Kraai. She was the third of three children and grew up surrounded by family, faith, and lifelong friendships. Carol graduated with honors from Luther South High School and attended Valparaiso University for two years before marrying the love of her life, Richard L. Schroer, Sr. While Richard completed his senior year, Carol worked as the executive assistant to the president of Indiana Steel Products in Valparaiso.
Carol and Richard were married on June 6, 1958, and shared nearly 68 beautiful years together built on faith, love, laughter, and devotion to family. Together they raised three children: Elizabeth Corry, Richard Jr., and Douglas. Carol was a proud and loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her endless joy.
After spending 10 years in Chicago, Carol and Richard moved to Danville, Illinois, where they built a warm and loving home focused on giving their children every opportunity for a wonderful education and life. Once her children began school, Carol worked part-time as a bookkeeper for a local business. After spending 10 years in Danville, the family returned to Chicago following Richard’s promotion.
As her children grew into young adults, Carol returned to work as the executive assistant to the president of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate in Illinois, a position she held for 10 years before retiring in 1991. Carol was admired for her kindness, intelligence, organization, and genuine care for others.
Following Richard’s retirement in 2000, the couple built their dream home in Barton Creek Lakeside Country Club in Spicewood, Texas. Carol embraced retirement with joy and enthusiasm. She was an avid golfer who loved spending time with friends on the course, traveling throughout the United States, and enjoying unforgettable cruises and vacations in the Caribbean. She also generously gave back to her community by serving two four-year terms on the board of directors for the Spicewood Library.
Carol will be remembered for her warmth, elegance, strong faith, quick wit, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Her gentle spirit and generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Loretta Kraai; her sisters and brothers-in-law, John and Patricia Palkovitz, Richard and Loretta Black, and Louis and Elda Schroer; and her brother-in-law, Harry Wiggins.
