Carol grew up in a loving family, which included her brother David Keith, 12 aunts and uncles, 28 great aunts and uncles, and too many cousins to count. Carol loved to travel. Her dad was stationed in Texas, Arkansas, Michigan, Colorado, and Minnesota and finally back to Austin, Texas, where she graduated from McCallum High School. She then went on to Texas State University to get her degree in education. It was there she met and married her husband Thomas Wilson in 1969. She was hired by Austin ISD to teach 5th grade. Carol continued to teach 5th graders her entire 40 year teaching career She even taught some of her students' children or her "grandchildren" as she called them. Carol often kept up with her students' years after they left her classroom, even sending them postcards from her travels.
Carol and her husband had a daughter Jessica who was born with Cerebral Palsy, and needed Physical Therapy and a number of surgeries as a child. During this time she also earned her Master's Degree in Education from UT Austin, and was also very active in politics. She was involved in the National Education Association, Texas State Teachers Association and was Democratic chair for her district.
Carol was named Austin ISD Teacher of the Year and was given the opportunity to travel and speak about her love of teaching to teachers all over the state. Carol retired from teaching, and enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. and Europe with her husband.
If you were to ask Carol what some of her favorite things would be she would tell you: her family, her cats, her students, Dr. Pepper, taking photographs, the grammar of the English language, and her collection of sand from all over the world.
