Colleen was born to Earl S. Adams, Sr. and Nelda W. Adams on June 26,1944. She was born in Ottumwa, Iowa and moved to San Antonio when she was two years old. Despite her Midwest beginnings, she proudly considered herself a Texan. Johnny and Colleen were married for 54 years. They met in 1964 in San Antonio where they grew up, graduated from high school, and were married in 1969.
Colleen was a devoted military wife and homemaker. For thirty years, she supported Johnny’s lifelong passion for flying as a fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard along with his career as an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA. Colleen would often drive long distances from New Orleans, Houston, and Austin to San Antonio while Johnny slept in the back seat so he could perform his duties in service to his country. She was truly the wind beneath Johnny’s wings.
When she wasn’t helping her husband with his work and military duties, Colleen spent her time in service to others. Colleen was a faithful volunteer at many charitable organizations, including 33 ½ years at Seton Hospital, 20 years at The Settlement Home for Children, 20 years at The Austin Steam Train Association, and many years with Caritas of Austin. She also served as Beekeeper for the Dutch Dolls Quilting Bee.
By the grace of God, the Marceaus and the Bergerons started as neighbors in 2012 and quickly became family. That family expanded in 2021 to include Arthur, Madison, and Nicholas Hutton.
Colleen had a deep love for people, especially children. Colleen treasured her role as Godmother to Lauren and Brayden Bergeron where she played an integral part of their lives. Ever a kid at heart, she was always up for a playground, waterslide, or rollercoaster. Known affectionately as “Ca”, Colleen was a beloved grandmother and close family member to the Bergeron family. She was also a devoted friend who made an impact on many people as was evidenced by those who came to see her in the final days of her life.
Colleen’s passing has left a void that is difficult to fill. The Bergeron and Hutton families (Carolyn, Cheri, Lauren, Brayden, Art, Madison, and Nicholas) celebrate Colleen’s life and take comfort knowing that she is surrounded by her husband and beloved family members in Heaven.
A memorial service honoring Colleen’s life was held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church of Austin, 8001 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas.
