Born on April 26, 1944, in Salley, South Carolina, Ed was the son of Edwin Poteat LeCroy Sr. and Helen Jones LeCroy. From a young age, he showed a strong work ethic, quick wit, and a deep curiosity about how things worked. As a teenager, he delivered newspapers on his bicycle, worked in a grocery store, and later at Salley Tractor and Supply. Family often recalled his adventurous spirit and sense of humor from those early years—whether exploring the family farm, getting into harmless mischief on summer trips, or marveling at something as simple as an elevator ride on a family vacation.
Ed earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, where he co-oped with Southern Bell in Columbia, South Carolina. After graduation, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in Boston, Massachusetts. While in Boston, he met his wife, Sheila Acton, and they married soon after. Ed went on to complete his MBA in Finance from Indiana University and spent more than 30 years as a financial leader, serving as Controller and Chief Financial Officer for companies including McDonnell Douglas and several Austin-based businesses.
Outside of work, Ed lived with purpose and passion. He served faithfully as a Deacon and lay leader in several Presbyterian churches and was deeply committed to prison ministry, including involvement with Bill Glass Ministries. He was fascinated by what he didn’t yet know in the Bible and was a frequent participant in Bible studies, including larger gatherings such as the Christian Scholars Forum in Austin. A devoted Scoutmaster during his son’s Scouting years, he guided and mentored young men for more than four years.
An avid astronomer and outdoorsman, Ed volunteered with local astronomy organizations for over two decades and could often be found gazing at the night sky through one of his telescopes. He loved mountain climbing and summitted many peaks, including Mount Rainier in his late 40s. He was also active in the Austin chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, an organization connecting senior-level finance and accounting professionals.
Ed is survived by his wife, Sheila, and his son, Ed LeCroy III, both of Austin, Texas, and by his sister, Lou Hall, of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Helen LeCroy.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held on December 6th at 3:00 p.m. at Lake Travis Presbyterian Church, located at 14820 Hamilton Pool Rd, Austin, TX 78738. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Lake Travis Presbyterian Church to continue his ministry and lifelong connection with the church community.
Ed will be remembered for his faith, intellect, humor, and quiet generosity—a man who lived with purpose, looked to the heavens with wonder, and walked humbly with God.
