Elizabeth Ann Bearden (Betty) Motheral of Spicewood, Texas passed away on June 30, 2026 at the age of 86. She was born on October 23, 1939 in San Benito, Texas where she grew up. She was the second child and first daughter of a family of eight children and was raised on a small farm several miles east of the small Rio Grande Valley town.
She worked as a bookkeeper and ultimately office manager for three construction related companies. She began her professional career as a secretary in a ready-mix concrete business, R.W. Liston Company in Harlingen, Texas in 1958. After about ten years, she moved on as office manager for our Highway construction company, Motheral Contractors, Inc. with main offices in Weslaco, Texas. In 1976, she moved to Austin, Texas and became the office manager for The Texas Hot Mix Asphalt Association, where she worked until her retirement two years later.
In the early 1980s, she and her husband Paul decided to attend the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for a year in Santa Monica, California for a change of pace from construction and Texas. She found she preferred Texas.
She was actively involved in Church, the Barton Creek Lakeside Community, the group of ladies, dear friends, that were her needlepoint buddies who met weekly to “stitch” at the Austin Country Club. She particularly loved the involvement we shared with various activities at Texas A&M University, from scholarships, music activities, the Foundation and the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study. But above all, she loved her family. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and Noreen Bearden; her four brothers, Billie Dean Bearden, Eldon H. Bearden Jr., Randle S. Bearden and Robert G. Bearden; and two sisters, Patricia B. Moore and Helen B. Renken.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Haskell Motheral; her son, William R. Sandlin Jr. (wife Niobe); her grandsons, Nicholas R. Sandlin (wife Alex) and Jonathan Sandlin; her stepchildren, Janet Motheral Thompson (husband Robert H. Thompson), Laine Motheral Meyers (husband Donald R. “Bubba” Meyers) and Mark G. Motheral (wife Trish Motheral); grandchildren, Randi Elizabeth Thompson Henry (husband Brandon Henry), Cory Thompson (wife Anna Thompson), Cooper S. Thompson (wife Amanda Thompson), Kay Motheral, Jace Motheral (wife Samantha); great-grandchildren, Valerie Blake Sandlin, Hayes Haskell Sandlin, Riley Elizabeth Henry, Hudson Henry, Hayden Henry, Jack Thompson, Lucy Thompson, Carter Thompson, Archer Thompson, Harper Thompson, Max Motheral, and Riley Motheral.
Friends and family will remember our sweet Elizabeth, Lizza, Betty (take your choice) as a loving and devoted lady, always putting others first and always there with a smile. She was an incredibly gifted needlepointer and loved hanging out with her needlepoint friends. She loved being with our friends from the Barton Creek Lakeside community, our friends from the Rio Grande Valley, Crested Butte Colorado, where we had a home for over twenty years, and the Texas A&M community in College Station. She loved to travel and we travelled the world, and being a former bookkeeper, of course she kept very detailed diaries of all of our adventures, which made great material to be read to her in her last months. Most of all, she loved her family and sharing time, wisdom, and insight with three wonderful generations. She definitely touched the lives of all those she came in contact with, from the employee at the small shop around the corner to the traveler aboard the cruise ship. Her infectious smile and loving presence were noticed and admired.
The family would like to thank the three amazing sisters, Debra Downs, Carolyn Smith, and Judy Little and loving hospice staff for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in her final days. The three special sisters, Debbie, Carolyn, and Judy, shared and cared every moment of every day for over two years and together with our long-time dear and devoted housekeeper, companion, and friend, Yene Godinez, kept their precious Ms. Lizza happy and laughing.
