James Maurice Cook, 70, (Jim, Dad, Doppie) left us to be with friends and family in heaven on February 13, 2014. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. His love of life and compassion for others was magnetic. He had an exuberant passion for spending time with friends and family and sharing his love of Lake Travis and the waterways of Florida, The Keys, and Bahamas. Jim was fun, feisty, and a true prankster whose love and energy was contagious.
Jim was born in Ft Worth, TX, attended Pascal High School and was an Eagle Scout. He and his wife, Sharon, were high school sweethearts and married in 1963. Jim graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Education and taught metal shop in the Ft Worth area. He and Sharon moved to Austin in 1973 for Jim to pursue a career as a New Product Development Engineer with Glastron Boats for the next seven years. In 1980, Jim and Sharon began Cook Mail Service and ran the business together until they sold it in 2012. Jim regularly attended River Bend Church with his family.
In 1977, Jim and Sharon moved to Lake Travis and shared their love for the lake, boating, and outdoors. In addition to spending countless hours on Lake Travis, they spent 13 years on their beloved boat, The Iron Butterfly, cruising the Bahamas and Florida Keys with family and friends.
Jim adored his children and their families, Kristen Cook Muennink (husband, Andrew) and Jeff Cook (wife, Kim). He was a huge part of their lives and was "Doppie" to five grandchildren: Drew, Landen, Lexi, Kylie, and Colton.
Jim underwent a heart transplant through Seton Heart Specialty Care and Transplant Services in 2007. He was gifted with six wonderful years post-surgery. Sincere appreciation and gratitude go out to the many caregivers and staff at SHSCTS including Dr. Mary Beth Cishek, Dr. Stephen Bekanich, Dr. Mark Lindsey, and Dr. Jordan Weingarten.
A memorial and celebration of Jim's life will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis Monday, February 17 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Seton Heart Specialty Care and Transplant Center, 1301 W. 38th St, Austin, TX 78705.
