January 7, 1920 – January 11, 2011
JoAnne was born in Indianapolis, IN, the daughter of Anna Ibach and Gilbert B. Clippinger. She graduated from Hammond High School, Hammond IN, and was a 4th generation graduate of De Pauw University in Greencastle, IN, continuing her education at the University of Houston where she received a Master of Education.
In 1941 she married Henry G. Randolph. They had two daughters, Margaret Anne and Mary Jane, and raised their family in Houston, TX.
The happiest part of JoAnne’s life began in 1967 when she married William W. Sweet, Jr., also a graduate of De Pauw. They were active members at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Many will remember her for serving on the Altar Guild for 30 years. She was also very active with the SMU chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, Dallas Women’s Club, Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, and Dallas Lawyer’s Wives. She also served as a volunteer as the Day Care Director at Wesley-Rankin Community Center, where she trained and certified teachers for Head Start. In 1999, JoAnne, her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter all became members of the Daughters of the American Revolution on the same date. During their 38 years of marriage, Bill and JoAnne enjoyed many wonderful trips together to Europe, Latin America, and all across the USA. They were members of Royal Oaks Country Club, Briarmeadow Street People, and Three Dog Society.
Also a happy time in her life was the last 13 months she spent near her own family in Austin, TX. She lived at the Summit at Westlake, an independent living center, where JoAnne was especially independent. During that short period, she touched the hearts of not just the residents, but the many staff members who treated her as they would a member of their own families. She had a chance to reconnect with Margie after living in different cities for 40 + years, and spent much special time with Charlie and Julie’s family. JoAnne spent her last days right there in her apartment, which was furnished just like her house in Dallas. She died peacefully in her sleep.
Living to age 91, JoAnne was preceded in death by many family members of her own, as well as Bill’s family. Most special were her mother Anna Ibach Clippinger, her sister Mary Jane Jordan, her daughter Mary Jane Randolph, and of course, William W. Sweet, Jr.
JoAnne is survived by her daughter Margaret Neuenschwander and her husband Charles of Lakeway, TX: granddaughter Julie Nichols, and her husband Grant, and their children Janie, Dru, and Sam of Selma, TX. In Bill’s family, she is survived by daughter Emily Scarborough, granddaughter Tricia Scarborough, and her children Case and Cale Wegner,
She is also survived by her nieces and nephew Caryl Baum, JoAnne Jordan, and Scott Jordan. Most special to JoAnne were Bill’s brother Richard Sweet and his wife Barbara, as well as many others in Bill’s extended family.
