Lisa (Wharton) Markos, 71, passed away on May 20 after a short hospital stay in Lakeway, TX following a long progressive illness. She was surrounded by her family and incredibly loved as a warm, caring, family-oriented, and incredible wife, mother and grandmother. Truly a beautiful life well lived.
She leaves behind her loving husband Art, children Nick (San Diego), Christina (Austin), their spouses Amanda and Gabe respectively, and her most precious grandchildren Elie and Arthur in San Diego and Vince in Austin. Also her sister Wendy in Connecticut and her husband, children and grandchildren as well as her brother Dana in Massachusetts, his wife, children and grandchildren.
After graduating from the University of Maine with a BS in Special Education, she and her husband lived in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and most recently The Hills, TX. As a young girl, she was a fashion model for the Jordan Marsh Co. in Boston. Her love of children led her into a long career as an educator. She received her school director license and started several schools in the Los Angeles area. In Santa Barbara, she worked as a consultant for both public and private schools and taught at every level from pre-school to special needs high school students.
Having grown up in Dover, MA, she was an avid tennis player and skier who would always remind her husband that she was the best skier in the family. She and her daughter loved bike riding around the beautiful beaches of Santa Barbara. She never missed a soccer, football or baseball game that her son was playing in as well as soccer and softball played by her daughter. She loved her annual summer trips to MA to visit family and friends. Most important to her was her longtime love as a parishioner of the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox church. She spent many years as a Sunday school teacher and headed the annual scholarship committee as well as the youth JOY group. Nothing made her happier than seeing the children thrive.
The funeral is scheduled for May 29, 2024 at 1:00 PM at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox church (414 St. Stephens School Rd, Austin, TX 78746), followed by interment at the Holy Archangels Greek Orthodox Monastery (2191 Twin Sisters Dr., Spring Branch, TX 78070) near Blanco, TX.
