MARGARET DAWN GRINER MITCHELL, December 29, 1935 – August 30, 2020

Margaret Dawn Griner Mitchell of Horseshoe Bay, TX, age 84, died August 30, 2020. Born in Jasper, TX on Dec 29, 1935 to Milton Ernest Griner and Elma Mae Stringer Griner, Margaret was the youngest of two children.

Margaret was reared in Kirbyville, TX where her parents owned E.E. Stringer Funeral Home, founded by her maternal grandfather. Her mother was office manager for the Stringer family insurance company. Margaret attended elementary and high school in Kirbyville, graduating in 1953. She was active in the Kirbyville marching band and was the 1950 Lion’s Club Sweetheart.

Margaret met Glenn Wayne Mitchell of San Augustine, TX, in 1953 while attending the University of Texas in Austin and he was attending Texas A&M University in College Station. They married on October 18, 1955 in Kirbyville, TX.

Shortly after marriage, Glenn entered military service and Margaret began her life as an Army wife. An Army wife is a partner and integral part of military service. Over the course of their career, they made 16 military moves within the United States and Germany. Daughter Leslie, was born in 1958 in Munich, Germany; and son, Wayne was born in 1962 in Knoxville, TN. Margaret traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean countries and the Middle East. In 1963 and 1967, Margaret and children returned home to Kirbyville to live while Glenn served in Vietnam. After retirement from the military in 1980, they returned to Texas and settled in the Austin area. They lived in Austin for 14 years, moving to Horseshoe Bay, TX in 1994.

Margaret was active in the Military Wives’ Club and volunteered at US military hospitals at many of the military duty stations. She was a member of Manchaca United Methodist Church while living in Austin, and later in The Church at Horseshoe Bay. Margaret was active social member of the community, playing bridge and golf frequently. Although a recreational golfer, Margaret was delighted when she once shot a “hole in one”.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Glenn Wayne Mitchell of Horseshoe Bay, TX, and daughter Leslie Dawn Mitchell of Bee Cave, TX. Additional survivors include her sister, Juanita Stover of Silsbee, TX, nephew Earl B. Stover III and wife, Janis, of Silsbee, TX; nephew M. Andrew Stover and wife, Lori, of Plano, TX; grandniece Elise B. Stover of Dallas, TX; grandniece Janna M. Stover and husband, Peter Fobel, of Oakland, CA; and several cousins.

Margaret was preceded in death by her son, Glenn Wayne Mitchell, Jr. and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASCPA)

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 10:00 am at The Church at Horseshoe Bay, 600 Hi Ridge Rd. Horseshoe Bay, TX. Interment will follow at 2:30 pm at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX.
