I met Mike in the Air Force when we went to radar schools at Kessler Air Force Base in 1985. Our class had about 10 guys and we had a close bond being in classes all day long over almost a year. Mike was a few years older than most of us and he was a natural leader. We all looked up to him. Chris, Saul, Rockwood, Lori some of the other guys I can remember from class. Mike was the smartest person in class, coolest dude ever. Mike rode his motorcycle all over and wore cowboy boots, and he was from New York with that tough outer side but he was the nicest person who would literally do anything to help his friends or someone he didn’t even know.  We had one exam that everyone in class failed except Mike. Instead of leaving us behind, Mike took his personal time to tutor all of us and we made it through on the next try. Mike would never leave his friends behind. After the Air Force, I would run into Mike at Oklahoma FAA training schools. I would be walking outside or down a hallway in Oklahoma and I would hear that unmistakable “yo Gerzema!” or if I saw Mike first “yo Calabrese!” In my best New York accent and then we would spend time laughing about the old Air For e days and catching up with each other. We would go years without seeing each other but when we would run into each other at school it was like we just picked right up where we left off. One of the managers here in Hawaii worked with Mike on some projects and would send hellos back and forth between us. When that manager gave me the news that we lost Mike I was shocked and I cried because Mike was really important to me as a young person who left home for the first time and in Air Force training school. Mike treated me like a younger brother, he looked out for me, and made sure I got help in school when I needed it. Mike is one the few people that once you meet you never forget and you are always friends no matter what. I send my condolences to his family and friends. Mike is missed by us all!

I have had the privilege of knowing Mike since 1989. We were stationed together at Templehof AFB in Berlin GE. Mike helped a kid that thought he was stronger then the world to understand h was only a small part of it. I loved my time with Mike on the Softball fields of Germany and the Golf Courses of Oklahoma. Mike was a true friend and I am heart broken with his passing.
I wish his family peace and the comfort that he is looking down and was a truly special person

Mike passed on the day of the Beaver Moon, a total eclipse and blood moon. Clear sky. Take flight! Infinity. Geometry Of Divinity. Alpha and Omega.

He called me Buzz. At least once. Could be saying it now. Tough. We laughed anyhow. Point is, my brother passed on the day of the Beaver Moon, a total eclipse of the blood moon, and I feel deeply about that fact. Coincidence or intentional calling, will never know, even though we say so. Beyond the beyond. Immense. Wonderous Infinity. Lift off. Spirits soar. Spirituality. Faith. Love. Kindness. Repeat.

I'm so very sorry for the family's loss. Mike was a big personality and leaves a big void. I remember traveling with Mike for work quite a bit. One time we all traveled to San Francisco to work on a radar. They wanted me to pick where we went for dinner, and I chose a place nearby since we planned to walk there.  I led the way from our hotel and led our party up a very steep street. When we reached the top of the street, I realized that we were traveling in the wrong direction. I reluctantly told Mike that we had walked about half a mile up a very steep street, going the wrong way, and we had to turn around and go back the way we came, and he said, "Lopez, if we get to that restaurant you picked and there's no seating, YOU'RE DEAD!" Luckily there was adequate seating at the restaurant and Mike let me live to see another day. 


My life won’t be the same without you brother !!!

My sincere sympathy to the loved one's of Mike Calabrese at this most difficult time.    Mike was a great person and family man.  He talked about his daughters, his parents, etc. all the time in conversations with me.   I talked about my family and things that were going on with them with Mike.   Mike gave me a lot of advice when my son enlisted the US Air Force.  I remember Mike and I discussing the meals in basic training.   Mike said.. "Tell him... Don't Eat the Pancakes... They taste like Styrofoam!".... If you knew Mike, that's Mike!   Lots of good memories of Mike.   One time that I remember, Mike and I were on a business trip to a radar site in Massachussetts doing a CARSR Optimization.   I worked with Mike closely for about 2.5 weeks that trip.   He told me, "Joe, you're a DRIVER...You drive and get things done."   I'm not bragging about it here, but that is what Mike thought of me and I appreciated it.  I told him that.  Mike was a generous guy.  On his own, Mike went so far as to buy T-shirts for personnel that worked on the CARSR Implementation.  However, my T-shirt was special.   Mike made me a shirt that said "DRIVER" on it.  Mike you were the REAL DRIVER! You were passionate about your job, your beliefs, etc. , but deep down inside you were a very humble and down to Earth man, who loved life, his family, and friends.  He’s in a better place now and HE WILL BE MISSED and never forgotten!

Mike You are by far the best friend I ever had. I will miss you everyday single day of my life.  I promise you that I will continue to make the most of my life with every passing day. Making the most of life was the promise we both made to each other when we decided to become the best of friends at the age of 12. We journeyed through parallel lives together. We went to high school together played baseball and basketball when we were teenagers. We went to college together. And after college we joined the United States air force together with the same recruiting officer. Our purpose of joining the US Military was to serve our great country. I was so proud to stand beside you in uniform. We each had 2 children who are almost identical ages. Our children have grown to be the finest people I have ever met.  I have had an amazing life because of my life of friendship with you.
