

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Murrell Glen Gates, 92, died peacefully at home on July 11, 2025 in Austin, Texas. His family was the center of his life, and his gentle spirit and kind heart will be missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Glen was born on February 3, 1933 to Myrtie Welch Gates and the Reverend Lehman S. Gates in Dry Prong, Louisiana. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Evelyn Jewell Ogden Gates; his son, Michael Glen Gates and his wife, Perri Verdino-Gates. He is also survived by granddaughter, Lauren Meinecke and her husband, Stephen Meinecke; granddaughter, Gillian Gates, and great-granddaughters, Claire and Chloe Meinecke.
He graduated from Waterproof High School and was a star athlete in multiple sports. Glen attended Louisiana State University where he played football, and graduated with a BS in Liberal Arts from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. He admirably served his country as an Army Ranger during the Korean War era.
Glen worked in the oil and gas business for his entire career throughout Louisiana, Texas and many places across the world including Brazil and Libya. He built his own company and developed specialized tools used in oil drilling.
As the son of a baptist minister, Glen grew up in a loving, Christian family and developed a strong love for God and family. His daily walk was a witness to his faithfulness to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Glen served his church, his community and his family all the days of his life. He was a good and faithful servant for the Lord.
Matthew 25:21 - His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
The burial service with military honors will be held at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas for the immediate family. A memorial celebration for extended family and friends will be scheduled in the coming weeks.
