Pete began this life in Scarsdale, New York, being the youngest child in the Schulte family and much adored. That was a nice beginning; however the challenges of his life began at age 11 when his father had a stroke and later died when Pete was 15. He and his mother were even closer through the struggles of the next several years until she died when he was 20 years old. Thus began the highs and lows of his life.
He always credited his years in the Marines for giving him the discipline he needed to succeed in life. He applied that discipline to complete his bachelor’s degree in Florida while working and raising his family. With his faith in God, he overcame each obstacle life threw at him - and there were many.
He met and married his first wife, Genevieve, in 1963, and within two years, they were blessed with their children, twins Laura and Eileen, and son Peter.
Pete was very athletic, social and charming. After his service in the Marines, he entered the business world at the bottom, delivering mail at an advertising company but quickly advanced. Capitalizing on opportunities others overlooked, he moved into media buying and later into sales. Throughout his career, doors closed and doors opened, and in his later years he gave God the credit for providing the path and clearing the obstacles along the way. When one of those doors closed, he received an unexpected offer to go into radio station management prompting him to move his family to Florida. It was there that he really shined and earned his nickname, “the idea man.” From that point on, he enjoyed tremendous success eventually moving to Houston, Texas.
Pete met his second wife, Pam, and her two sons Brett and Clint, in Houston. Shortly after they were married in 1985, he was offered the opportunity to run a radio station group in Winston-Salem, NC. He moved his second family to Winston where they lived for five years. During that time, Pete and his partner purchased the entire group of twelve stations and he became an owner and operator of his own company. The group was sold in 1995, by which time Pete and Pam had returned to Houston and settled into suburban life. Pete enjoyed family, golf, travel, and truly enjoyed all the wonderful friends they made there. Later, wanting to live closer to Brett and Clint, they moved to Austin to finish out their retirement years. During that time, Pete applied his business acumen to charitable work and served on the boards of Houston’s El Centro de Corazon and Austin’s Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Pete loved college sports and had been passionate about Notre Dame since childhood. He loved playing tennis, golf and when younger, basketball. He loved Kendall Jackson wine. He enjoyed reading non-fiction, doing crosswords and in retirement he took up the piano again. He loved hearing others’ experiences and enjoyed sharing his own. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved making people smile, especially his grandkids. He possessed endless patience and in later years he was a friend as well as a parent.
In the end, his body betrayed him and his strength began to fail but he never complained. He wasn’t afraid because he knew this earth was only a temporary home. Without a shadow of a doubt, he believed that his true home was with the Lord in heaven - Christ’s promise to us.
He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Pam. They shared a deep and loving partnership traveling, laughing and embracing the beauty of life together for 40 years. He is also survived by his son, Peter (wife, Miki), his daughters Laura and Eileen, and his bonus sons, Brett (wife, Jill), and Clint Wilson. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Daniel Stucki (wife, Kaci), Amanda Connors, (husband Alex), Cordelia Schulte, Sadie Schulte, Cade Wilson, Makenna Wilson, and Finley Wilson.
May his memory be a blessing.
