Richard Anthony Cohen, 75, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2020. He was at home surrounded by his families love and appreciation for his life. Dick grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His parents Clarence and Mary Cohen had five children. His parents were devoted Catholics and Dick embraced their strong Catholic faith. It would continue to be the foundation he built his life around.

He met his wife and best friend of 52 years, Mary Ann, at St. Norbert College in De Pere Wisconsin. They dated for 4 years. After he graduated and got married, Dick entered the army. They were stationed in Germany for 2 years. Dick then had one tour in Vietnam. He was a Captain and received the Bronze Star medal.

After the army, he returned to Green Bay where they started a family together. Dick was so proud of his 2 daughters Kari and Shannon. As life unfolded, Kari married Brian Burrowes and they have an 11 year old son named Cruz. Family continued to be the focus of his life eventually bringing them to the Lakeway, TX to be together.

In 1981 Dick had the opportunity to buy a McDonald's franchise in Canada. Dick and Mary Ann were active owners for 22 years building great relationships and restaurants in the town of Markham outside of Toronto, Canada. Dick loved the business in large part because of his joy for caring about his staff and inspiring them to enjoy their work.

He was also passionate about giving back to the community. He was on the local Hospital board and served as the president for many years.

Outside of his faith, family and work, Dick loved all sports! His favorites were golf and the Green Bay Packers. The last 9 holes he played was with his son-in-law Brian and his grandson Cruz. His other passion was having a home in Sarasota, Florida for 25 years. Beach life renewed his spirit and brought him and Mary Ann great joy and peace.

Dick will be remembered for his love of people and helping to make their day a joy filled one. He brought to others humor, kindness, acceptance, presence and a big warm hug. His last years in Lakeway were very happy. He loved his life with his family and friends within the community. He participated along with Mary Ann in a local production group called Sing Along, where he was always enthusiastic about putting on a great show. He also delivered meals to those in need through Meals on Wheels for over 10 years. His caring nature brought tremendous joy to those he served.

And finally, Emmaus Catholic Church filled his soul with God's love. He read the liturgy there for 12 years because he felt honored to share God's sacred word. We remember Dick as living life from gratitude, a quiet and deep faith and a joyful heart that he shared with those around him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030.

  • Dick was so proud of his 2 daughters Kari and Shannon. As life unfolded, Kari married Brian Burrowes and they have an 11 year old son named Cruz. Family continued to be the focus of his life eventually bringing them to the Lakeway, TX to be together.

Dear Mary Ann,

Our friend Glenn McKee contacted me to let me know of Dick's passing.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Together you and Dick made the McDonald's Brand come to life in Markham and Stouffville.

Your legacy lives on in a number of Managers and Crew that were part of your founding Team and continue on your great traditions under Finlayson Hospitality Partners.

It has been a number of years since you, Dick and I enjoyed lunch in our newly renovated McCowan & Highway #7 McDonald's, but my husband Todd and I think of you often.

Thank you for all you did to pave our way and make McDonald's the respected company we are today.

Our entire McFamily celebrates Dick's giving nature.

Our only hope is the love and memories provide peace.

God Bless,
Marcia Finlayson

Oh No, we have lost our dear friend Richard 'Cousy' Cohen. Friends through High School, College, Shade. Both Dick and Mary Ann were part of our bridal party, he was Richard's 'Best Man'. A lot of great history and fun during those times. Unfortunately, not able to get together much in recent years.
Mary Ann, we have moved to Kansas City to be nearer Nicole/Jason and grandsons (much like you did).
Please call if you can sometime-913-839-2997.

We were so blessed to have Dick in our lives . he was a wonderful second Father to our son Brian . We have so many fond memories of Christmas dinners together , Dick's famous "Cherries Jubilee " became a standard every year at our table , We will miss his wonderful smile, his love of family and his very special hugs .
We mourn with Mary-Ann, Kari, Brian, our darling Cruz and with Shannon . We also rejoice with Dick because we know that he is in the presence of his Lord and Savior .
He will always be remembered, and, he will always be missed by us ...

I have such fond memories of playing with Kari when we were young before you moved and then enjoying my visits with Kari when you would come back to Green Bay. Mr. Cohen was such a kind man and while it has been years since I have seen him, it was such a joy to watch the tribute and see all of your wonderful family memories. God bless you all as you celebrate his life!

I met Mr Cohen when I was 8 years old - when my brother took me to his new girlfriends house for a swim. He was warm and welcoming to this little stranger and immediately became family. From that time on, every time I was in McDonalds he made me feel like a special guest, which when you’re 8,9, and 10 was pretty cool! As our families melded and became official, Mr Cohen always had a smile, a twinkle and a laugh for whatever over the top antics came out of me - he always made me feel like he got a kick out of me and that I was special for just being me. Quick to give an amazing bear hug squeeze and tell me how crap my football team was (I can’t argue!) , Mr Cohen was an irreplaceable part of our family. I’m so grateful I got to spend one last holiday with him this past Thanksgiving in Austin, and I will treasure the lifetime of memories we’ve had with him as a family. He will truly truly be missed and remembered ever so fondly ❤️

While scrolling through the wonderful photographs I was struck by the reality that I was part of Dick's world for only the last 20 years.

I feel like he's always been in my life.

I think I always will feel that way.

I loved Dick and I felt his love. He shared his feelings freely. Equal parts coach and student of life,

Love to the entire family.

My Dad was so precious to us - his joy, his love, his support, his hugs ... I miss it all so much. I would love to hear his “I love you, shanster” right about now. He had so many redeeming qualities and now it’s up to me to make sure that those special qualities live on through me.
