Bob lived as though ordinary was never quite enough. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a servant of God. He was born on May 5, 1941, in Flushing, New York, to Robert John Egan and Mary Jane Barnola Egan, who each passed when Bob was young. He was raised with enormous love by his aunt and uncle, Ruth and Wes Egan.
He attended Oyster Bay High School Long Island, before embarking on his academic journey. He spent time at Brown University, Columbia University, Long Island University, and Abilene Christian College before finding his true collegiate home at The University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a minor in Accounting. At UT, Bob was a member of the water basketball team and was President of, and the only non-music major in, the UT choir.
He spent one semester in law school before wisely concluding it was not for him. He then sat for the CPA licensing examination, and became a licensed Certified Public Accountant, which he maintained until his death.
Bob began his professional life as a CPA at Haskins & Sells, now Deloitte & Touche. He moved from there to Scurlock Oil Co. before finding the role that would define the most consequential chapter of his career: Chief Financial Officer of Hollywood Marine, Inc. There he spent over 25 years. He then consulted with several companies.
A cradle Episcopalian, his faith was never quiet or private, it was active, generous, and community driven. As a young man, he served as a paid choir member at the historic St. George's Episcopal Church in Flushing, New York. Throughout his life, his church homes reflected the geography of a life richly lived. Bob served as President of Kairos of Texas and was active in the Diocese of Texas Cursillo Ministry. He held positions of leadership within the church spanning decades.
On July 7, 1989, Bob married Linda Duncan, promising the best was yet to come. They lived that promise faithfully through 37 beautiful years together. Bob adored Linda completely. She was always by his side, and he was always at his best when she was near.
Bob is the proud father of two children, Chesley and Rob, and his grandchildren were among his greatest joys, wearing the name "Grandad" with a pride that rivaled any other title he ever held.
Bob loved sudoku and solitaire, music, especially jazz, the theatre, which held a special place in his heart with memories of his paternal grandfather taking him to musicals as a boy. He loved to dance, cook, and entertain, a lover of food and wine, singing, and traveling. He was a scholar and a leader, an avid skier, played racquetball and squash, a certified scuba diver, and he loved playing golf, which he did on many courses all over the world.
He had a love of sports cars, beginning as a late teen, when he purchased an Austin-Healey and reached its fullest, with his prize 2000 Porsche 911 Millennium Edition. His favorite pastime was cheering on The University of Texas Longhorns for 65 years, holding 50-yard-line season tickets to the football games.
Bob served on The University of Texas Liberal Arts Advisory Board, served as President of the Houston International Food and Wine Society and was a member of Chafoe des Rotisseurs. He traveled to many countries exploring wine regions. He loved his steak served rare, his crawfish Cajun, fresh pasta, and Mexican food, and he made the best margaritas on the planet.
He served as President of the Eagle Valley Religious Foundation in Edwards, Colorado, helping coordinate and raise significant funds on behalf of the organization. In every city he called home, Houston and Sugar Land, Texas, Cordillera, Colorado, and Spicewood, Texas, Bob led, served, and gave generously.
He believed in more learning, more community, more love, more effort, and more joy, and even in his final years, continued to feed his mind daily, reading, thinking, engaging, never fully at rest. He loved deeply and led faithfully.
Bob is survived by his wife Linda Duncan Egan; daughter, Chesley Egan Martin (Charles), of Abilene, Texas and their children, Alec Egan (Claire), Meghan Martin, Maredith Martin Voss (Jayton) and grandchildren, Roosevelt and Anders Egan. Son, Robert John Egan (Sarah), of Irvine, California and their children, Noah, Josiah, and Lily Egan. Brother Wesley Egan (Virginia) of Washington D.C., brother-in-law, Steve Duncan of Angleton, Texas, and a wide, cherished circle of dear family and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Egan; brothers, Douglas and Bruce Egan; and aunt and uncle, Ruth and Wes Egan.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Marble Falls, Texas.
