

Scott M. Birk, 48, of Austin died on June 13, 2011, after being struck by a vehicle while running. Scott was born on February 25, 1963, in West Allis, WI, to Roy Robert Birk and Nancy Sue Campbell. He lived most of his childhood years in Waukesha, WI, along with his brother Troy and his sister Kristy. He graduated from Waukesha North High School where he played on the basketball and golf teams. In 1985 Scott graduated Magna Cum Laude from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and minored in Business Administration. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Mu Epsilon honor societies.
In 1985 he married Carla C. Paddock of Waukegan, IL , and they moved to the Dallas, TX, area. Scott worked as a Systems Analyst at Texas Instruments and Champlin Refining. He also earned an MBA in Finance at the University of North Texas in Denton.
In 1990 Scott and Carla moved to Austin, TX. They have three children – Taylor, Kelsey, and Nicolas. Scott was a devoted husband and father. He took an active role in many organizations related to school, athletics, and the arts in which his children participated. He coached soccer, kickball, and volleyball for his children’s teams. He was active in many Austin area swim programs including a term on a local board. Scott was an active volunteer over the last 14 years with Leander Independent School District including Project Graduation and Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students). He especially enjoyed leading the Cedar Park High School Football Tunnel Crew where he followed the Timberwolves from the sidelines. He volunteered whenever help was needed whether selling snow cones or painting theater sets. Kids and teachers enjoyed seeing a dad so involved.
Scott was an avid runner, completing about 50 marathons including 3 in Boston as well as cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, Houston, and Dallas. He was recognized as a top runner for his age group often placing in the top 3. He also placed many times in the overall Masters category. He competed in every distance from mile to marathon. Although he was a strong competitor, he encouraged other runners of every ability level and was known for his friendly demeanor. Most important to Scott was challenging himself to improve his personal best times. He generally trained in his neighborhood logging about 100 miles per week. Many area residents remember the tall man in black who always had a wave and ready smile as he ran through the community.
Those who knew him will remember his warm and caring spirit. He impacted many lives. He had a joy in living and will be missed.
Visitation will be at Weed-Corley-Fish in Lakeway on Friday, June 17, 6-8 PM. A celebration of Scott’s life will be held on Saturday at 10 AM at Austin Christian Fellowship.
