

Suzan Marie Germond (nee Major) passed away unexpectedly in Austin, Texas on June 5, 2013. Suzan was a scholar, writer, artist, wife and mother. She has been described by all who knew her as brilliant and loving with a warm sense of humor.
Suzan was a wonderful artist and will be remembered by many through her beautiful, whimsical creations. Suzan was dedicated to the art of mosaics and donated large pieces of her work to Lakeway Elementary School, Hudson Bend Middle School and Dripping Springs High School. She was active in the Society of American Mosaic Artists as a founding member, an in-coming board member and an energetic contributor at both the local and national levels.
Suzan was born in Calgary on May 5, 1960 to Jack and Helene Major. Her ambition and commitment to quality provided her with unusual opportunities and success. At 15, as a scholarship student, she attended the College of the Atlantic in Wales graduating with her International Baccalaureate. She then enrolled at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, graduating as the Gold medalist in Art History. Shortly thereafter, she obtained her Master's degree from New York University. Suzan taught at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary for two years before accepting a fellowship award from Stanford University where she earned her PhD in Art History. In 2008 Suzan completed a degree in theology at the University of the South.
Suzan loved to travel and spent significant time in France, Italy, India, Mexico, Peru and Chile as a student, aid worker, artist, and occasionally as a tourist.
In 1990, Suzan married Ken Germond and together they have two beautiful and treasured children, Alex and Mimi, both of Austin, Texas. Suzan is survived by a large and loving family including Ken, Alex, Mimi, her parents Jack and Helene Major, her brothers and their families - Peter and Marlene Major and Steve and Jennifer Major, all of Calgary, and Paul and Patty Major of Manhattan Beach, California.
Suzan is missed.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 17, 2:00 PM at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1500 North Capital of Texas Highway, Austin, Texas. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
