Born Winona Gertrude Dupont on April 9, 1930, in Rayne, Louisiana, she was the youngest of ten children, raised during the Great Depression. She was the first in her family to grow up speaking English as her native language, and the first to attend college. A graduate of Saint Joseph Catholic School, she finished high school in 1946 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1950.
Her degree took her to Houston, Texas, where she worked for Humble Oil. It was on a blind date at a University of Texas football game in Austin that she met Curtis Leroy Scott. They married in 1954 in Houston and began their life together.
The Scotts raised their four children in Dallas, where they were active members of Saint Rita Catholic Church, before later settling in Austin. Their home was always a welcoming one, with a batch of Winona's homemade frozen margaritas waiting in the freezer. They were devoted travelers who shared a deep love of seeing new places together.
Winona was a second mother to many of her nieces, nephews, and their children, welcoming them into her home with open arms. On stormy afternoons, neighborhood children knew to gather at her house, where she would make her famous caramel popcorn balls.
Winona was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Leroy Scott; her parents; and her nine siblings. She is survived by her four children, Doug, Lauren, Brian, and Paul; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a gumbo recipe that will keep her close for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to St. Rita Catholic Community in Dallas, Texas
