Brenette Patricia Francois

March 17, 1938January 19, 2020

Brenette Patricia Francois (née Johnson) was born March 17, 1938 in New Orleans, LA to Viola and Daniel Johnson. Brenette was born on St. Patrick’s Day, and she was a devote Catholic throughout her life. At an early age, Brenette learned to cook from her mother in the traditional New Orleans Creole cuisine and dishes. She met T.H. Francois Sr. in New Orleans and the two decided to move west to California in 1958. Once in California, Brenette worked hard to better herself and take care of her growing family. Her passions were her family, church, cooking, and her community. In the early 1970’s she began working with her husband to establish the Community Service Desk, a non-profit agency dedicated to helping children, senior citizens, feeding people, and providing health care services. After the death of her husband T.H. Francois Sr. in 1982, Brenette continued working and expanded on the Community Service Desk food and senior citizen program, becoming Culver City’s first “Food Bank”, feeding and providing health information to thousands of people. While running a business, Brenette managed to take care of a family of 10, in addition to catering and baking to support her family.

Brenette was actively involved in politics, and hosted many of Los Angeles City and County politicians at her home, including Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Los Angeles County Board Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, and U.S. House Representative Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. She advocated for fair and equal treatment of all and the Democratic way. She lived her life as a model of what she advocated for, being eclectic and open to all people regardless of race, color, or belief, and she raised her children to view the world in this way. She enjoyed family gatherings, sewing, music, reading, shopping, and of course cooking.

Brenette was proceeded in death by husband T.H. Francois Sr., daughter Marlene Franklin Harris, brother Curtis Joseph, brother Richard Joseph, sister Bernice Joseph Jackson, and brother Harold Johnson.
