Awww Callie, that was beautiful. I love you.  I remember how patient my dad was when I was in about the 4th grade and for the life of me I could not understand fractions. I was in tears one day, feeling so stupid because ' everyone else'  in my class made it seem so easy, and made fun of me daily. He told me to sit at the table while he got some things. He came back with a coffee cup, a gallon jug, a pie freshly baked pie in the pan among other gadgets, and another container of water. First he hugged me, told me he was proud of me for trying so hard. He said that as long as I always try and never give up someday I will get it. He told me how he was made fun of in school because he stuttered and so he knew how it felt to be called stupid. He added that there are some things kids will say about you that you won't be able to change, hard as you try, like his big nose. He said he hated his nose as a kid, thought he was ugly. I thought he was so handsome, it hurt my feelings for him because I had his nose. Anyhow he sat there at that table cutting that pie in half, into 4 pieces etc. We dumped cups of water into the gallon container, on and on until I finally made the connection. I was so happy and  I probably didn' tell him how I felt he had saved the day, but I came away from that moment in time really liking my nose and feeling smart. My dad really was such a good dad. Everyday there is something to remind me of another moment and I am greatful for those.

 My favorite memories of my Grampa Don are in his garden; snipping buds off tomatoes to make sure you had the best output of maters, mounding hills of dirt up and over tater leaves, throwing kitchen scraps to the chickens, pulling worms off ears of corn. Turning soil over with manure, scattering leaves and pine needles in rows of peas to keep moisture in. Gardening just seemed like second nature to me. I was wrong; Grampa taught me how to do it. It takes time and care to actually teach someone something useful. To give someone the gift of know how. Almost every day I come across something that he taught me. He is always working alongside of me. When my grampa is looking down on me I hope he knows how much I love him, how much he taught me, how special he always made me feel. When I am tending my garden, he is alive in my heart and hands.
