Gerald “Jerry” Lee Dickinson was born on July 23rd, 1935 in Brookfield, Missouri to William Gilbert Dickinson and Vivian Ruth Wyatt. Jerry was part of the 1954 graduating class of Fort Madison High School in Fort Madison, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1965. As part of his active service he was a Plane Captain aboard the USS Midway, one of his proudest accomplishments. In 1963, he married Roselyn “Darlene” (daughter of Orville and Goldie Millhollin). Together, Jerry and Darlene made a life together over the course of more than 56 years of marriage. Jerry began his 28-year career with GE Aviation in 1965 where he was an Aircraft and Engine mechanic at Edwards AFB and at Mojave Airport until his retirement in 1993.
In 2003, Jerry and Darlene relocated from Rosamond, CA to Phelan, CA with their daughter Susan’s family. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren to school and sporting events, doing yardwork, and watching movies such as old-time war classics, western movies, thriller movies, and eating popcorn. His grandchildren called him Dub or Dubby instead of Grandpa, a nickname he liked as much as the story of how he had become known as “Dub”, the great teller of tales… Dubby’s Sea Stories. He also had the opportunity to watch his grandchildren grow-up, graduate high school and college and become adults ready to create their futures. Many things made Dub laugh, but since social media has become the norm, taking his picture not only made him laugh, but whoever was behind the camera was sure to get a laugh as well.
Dub passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on June 24th, 2019 with his family by his side. Jerry was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife Darlene, daughter Susan Barrett and her husband Tom, stepson Roger Cline and his wife Gayle, cousin George Runquist of Tennessee, five grandchildren - Jennifer, Bryan, Amanda Barrett, Stephanie Norman of Arizona and Jerry Cline of Kansas, and six great-grandchildren in Arizona, California, and Kansas - Caleb, Will, Jacob, Joshua, Isabella, and Avery. Services will be held on July 3rd, 2:00pm at Joshua Memorial Park in Lancaster, CA.
