

John was born in Glenview, Illinois to George and Magdelena on August 8th, 1924. He was one of six children. He became a journeyman electrician at the age of 19. He worked as an electrician for the IBEW Local 134 in Chicago, Illinois and then for the IBEW Local in Southern California. In 1949 he was drafted into the army and spent two years with the 101st Airborne Squadron and 71 Signals Battalion in Korea and Japan. When the army found out he was an electrician they trained him to repair the teletype machines. After leaving the service, he and his wife, Betty would move to Rosemond, CA in 1956. They were divorced in 1960. He then met the love of his life, Marigold and they married in 1966. Along with raising three boys, they enjoyed dancing, golfing, and traveling. In his spare time, John was a scout leader for the Boy Scouts and was very involved with the Elks Lodge #1625 for 50 years. He also enjoyed fishing at the Fin and Feather Club in Palmdale.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marigold, his stepsons Mark S. Berg and Martin A. Berg, his brother Frank Schmidt and his sisters, Theresa Weinberg, Ann M. Wagner, Barbara Carl, and Margaret E. Thomas.
He is survived by his son, Richard and his wife Cheryl; daughter-in-law Tanja Berg; four grandchildren Cassandra [Matt] Groll; Treva [Michael]Winslow, Mark Berg, and Tina [Brendan] Gordon, 3 great grandsons and 1 great granddaughter and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00PM on Friday, April 7th at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary 808 East Lancaster Blvd. Lancaster, CA 93535. The service will be at the gravesite as we will be burying both him and his loving wife, Marigold so that they can be together forever.
