On Monday, April 27, 2020 at 10:39 a.m. , Nelson Moore, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin, departed this life for an everlasting union with his Heavenly Father. He was born on June 7,1947 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to Lewis Walter Moore and Josephine Talley Moore. Nelson had six siblings: Eloise Smith*, Lewis "Huck" Moore* , Mary Ann Moore*, Betty "Bet" Jean Welch, John "Red" Moore* and Donald "Duck" Moore. He attended school in Spartanburg and graduated from Carver High School. He continued to pursue higher education after high school graduation. In 1970, Nelson met his future "bride" Betty and his future son, Rodney. They became family.
Nelson served in the United States Air Force as a firefighter (1965-68). After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he worked for a short time for the railroad and after the railroad for Motown Record Corporation. Up until his retirement in 2001, Nelson was employed by the Department of Defense as a fire protection specialist, a communications supervisor and a supervisory firefighter (1976 - 2001).
Nelson was a people watcher. He enjoyed watching people while waiting for Betty while she shopped at the mall. He enjoyed playing dominoes and going to sports games, but he really loved playing golf. He often joked that his first set of golf clubs was a set of female clubs purchased by his wife as a birthday gift for him. Nelson had a beautiful bass voice. He sang with the Master Chorale two seasons and was founding member of the a cappella singing group, Callie Moore and Friends. He was a member of The Gideons International, an avid coin collector and an amateur photographer.
Before his health started to decline, Nelson attended The Highlands Christian Fellowship Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and communion leader. He was also an ordained deacon and served as a trustee in the past. He would often quote Romans 8:28 and say how blessed he was. He loved the Lord and was a living testimony to the goodness of God. Nelson was full of life and love. He adored his friends, and he lived for his family.
Nelson was preceded in death by his father Lewis, mother Josephine, brothers Lewis and John, sisters Eloise and Mary Ann. He is survived by his wife Betty, son Rodney, three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, sister Betty and brother Donald, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Nelson was generous, loving and an inspiration to many. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
