Never a dull moment, always a smile on his face, from model railroading to railroad fan trips to Hot Air Ballooning to blowing up the back yard on the 4th every year, ever seen red and green balls of fire chase a man out of his own back yard? I met Rod in the early ‘60's through the Monrovia Model Railroad Club which usually met at Rod's excellent California & Great Western Railway in his garage.  Rod and I didn't exactly see eye to eye on  a few issues (I was for JFK; he was for George Wallace) but neither of us let that keep us from being good friends.  We shared a deep appreciation for this country's history and for historic preservation of artifacts of earlier eras.  When Rod occasionally could not attend a meeting there was a big empty hole where his hearty voice, friendliness, humor and endless supply of stories belonged … and that vacancy has returned, only partly filled with the great memories, until we meet again.

I loved hearing Rod's stories about working at Disney, history of mining and anything and everything about trains and railroading. I wish I could have spent more time with him. I would often think about Rod when I worked on train, Disney and Bodie projects.

Rod. You always said I was "A hard act to follow"! I don't think you ever knew how much you influenced me. I admired your intellect, your wit and your passion for adventure. I have so many fond memories of working with you. You taught me so much and I will miss you forever.
