Born on October 13, 1934, in Hollywood, California, to Nelle Greene and Corde Campbell Kirkpatrick, Vance displayed an early fascination with aviation, a passion that would shape his extraordinary life.
Vance's remarkable career began with his service as a PBY-Catalina Naval Aviator during the Korean War, an experience that laid the foundation for his subsequent career as an Airline Transport Pilot, Multi-Engine, and Certified Flight Instrument Instructor. He flew both fixed-wing airplanes and helicopters. His illustrious tenure as a Captain with the Los Angeles County Sheriff (LASD) and later advisor post-retirement only added to his storied legacy.
Vance married his beloved wife of 69 years, Juanita Kirkpatrick, on June 2nd, 1956, and they had two daughters shortly thereafter, Cheryl Kirkpatrick (1957) and Charlene Moore (1959). While Vance and Juanita both had successful professional careers, they also prioritized family, travel, and philanthropy. The Kirkpatricks moved to Leona Valley, CA, in 1972 to enjoy all that the charming little community could offer their young family, and they were active community members in ensuring the town would stay that way for generations to come. One of their favorite pastimes together was dancing. If there was a live band, Vance and Juanita were the first couple on the dance floor, exhibiting such enjoyment that others would join in shortly thereafter.
Vance held a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science and Administration from California State University, Los Angeles (1970), and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California (1973). A lifelong learner at heart, he dedicated part of his life to teaching and nurturing many young minds with knowledge and wisdom. He was an avid reader, able to immerse himself in and finish an entire book within a day, showcasing his unparalleled intelligence. Vance's love for horses, mules, and aviation mirrored his dynamic spirit. His contributions and frequent letters to the editor of the Antelope Valley Press attested to his vibrant community involvement and his fervent desire to foster change.
Vance is survived by his wife, Juanita Kirkpatrick, their daughters, Cheryl Kirkpatrick and Charlene Moore (spouse William L. Moore), their grandchildren, NYPD Det. Jason Brunson (USAF Veteran), USAF Lt Col. and Dr. Michael Brunson, Christine Winter (US Army Veteran), Candice Vander Hyde, Sarah Moore, and several great-grandchildren. He is remembered not only for his achievements and public service but also for his boundless generosity and wisdom. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.
