Albert William Granzow III

Al was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1948 to Albert William Granzow II and Helen Elizabeth Price Granzow. The Granzows, had immigrated from Germany to the US in 1850 and the Prices came to the American Colonies in 1754.

He is survived by his life-partner Vicki, sister Barbara, brother Paul, and many nieces and nephews. Also preceded in death recently by his beloved cats Dusty and Josephine.

Al graduated from Newberry College, a private Lutheran college, in Newberry, South Carolina with a BA in Mathematics in 1970. He was there on a football scholarship and during his four years played on their team (then known as the Indians) with his friend and roommate, Roger. He also held an AAS Degree in Computer and Information Technology, which he earned at the Community College of Southern Nevada in 1997.

Al first worked at American Bakery in Florence SC, then taught 9th grade math and science. He traveled the states , including Alaska, working on oil rigs as a roughneck and a mud logger - which is a geological technician that monitors and analyzes drilling operations by collecting and interpreting geological data from rock cuttings and drilling fluids. He also was a waiter in a steak house, in Jackson Hole while living there. Settling in Las Vegas in the 1990s, Al worked as a math and science substitute teacher plus as an intern in the GIS field for the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

In 1998 he was hired by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada as a Geographic Information System Analyst (sharing an office with Vicki) and retired from there in 2013.

His favorite past-time was reading and hiking. Favorite places were Mount Charleston, the Wetlands, and Lake Tahoe in Nevada. He talked about and had fond memories of hiking in Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Granite Hot Springs & Creek in Wyoming, Congaree Swamp National Park, and Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, SC.

Palm Mortuary is handling his cremation and no funeral or memorial services are planned at this time. Donations can be made in Albert Granzow’s name to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
