Albert Schouten

Albert Al” Schouten passed away August 8 at home surrounded by his family after a 6-year battle with Alzheimer’s. Al was born Dec. 22, 1928, in Las Vegas to Ryndert and Augusta Schouten, immigrants from Holland. He was a graduate of 5th Street Grammar School and Las Vegas High School Class of 1946.

He married Marilyn Riggs on Oct. 28, 1951, and they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Al was a meatcutter by trade and owned Al’s Market and Al’s Hyde Park Market.

He joined the Clark County Sheriff’s Dept. as a Correction Officer in 5-15-1972 retiring 7-11-1992 as a detention Sergeant from the LVMPD.

Al was a member of the Masonic Fraternity for 72 years. He was Past Master of Vegas Lodge #32 and Nellis Lodge #46 and a Zelzah Shrine Clown. Al belonged to numerous Masonic affiliated organizations. He helped with the Rainbow Girls when his daughter joined and was Rainbow Dad. He was made a Master of the Grand Cross of Colors the highest honor of the organization.

Al was active in the Cub Scout Twin Lakes Pack and served as Treasurer. He assisted with the Boy Scouts as his son went up the ranks and went on many camping trips.

His favorite place to go was their cabin in Duck Creek Utah which he built. It was an accomplishment he was so proud of. They enjoyed their “toys” the ATV’s. He was a member of Duck Creek Community Church and helped in the building of the church.

Al is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Arend (Mona), daughter Lynne Ann (Kelly) Downing and Grandchildren Crystal (Wellington) Hall, Derek Schouten, Heather (Erich) Huber, Jonathan Downing, Christin (Sean) Hinton, step grandchildren Zoe and Ray Pantoja, great-grandchild Darion Atkins and Maci Mae Hinton and numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Services Sat. Aug. 28 at 1 pm at Masonic Memorial Building 2200 W. Mesquite Av.
