Ali passed late in the evening of September 13, 2023. His son Ayden Piroozi spent the early evening by his side. The household retired to bed. Ali’s wife, Corrine Murphy, told him she loved him at about 9:30 p.m., before going sleep. When Corrine checked on Ali at 10:30 p.m., he was gone. After a courageous but exhausting battle against cancer, Ali’s final wish for his life was to pass at home, which he did.
Ali’s death was called at 12:05 a.m., September 14, 2023. Ali’s death certificate shows an extra day. Anybody who knows Ali knows that he did everything always going for more. In his passing, Ali remained the same – he added an extra day to his life record.
Ali was born on February 6, 1968, in Tehran, Iran, to adoring parents Zarin & Ahmad Piroozi, joining his older sisters Hengameh and Nazila. By his own admission, growing up Ali was not the best student. But with the encouragement of his parents, he set his sights on medical school. Ali gained admission to the Azad School of Medicine in Tehran, Iran. Ali graduated, then set his sights on the United States. The dream of living in America blooming in Ali who loved watching western cowboy movies as a child.
Ali moved to the United States in 1998. Ali’s medical career in the United States began in one of the busiest ERs in the United States, Mount Sinai Hospital in Elmhurst, New York. Ali initially considered a career as an emergency room physician. However, Ali eventually decided to pursue neonatology. Ali became a double Board-Certified physician in pediatrics and neonatology. Ali moved to California in 2001, obtaining a position in the NICU at one of the best medical centers in the United States, Cedars Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills.
Ali met and married his first wife while living in Los Angeles. They moved to Las Vegas in 2005. Ali’s first marriage did not last, but it had within it one of the best days of Ali’s life – the birth of his precious son Ayden, on March 12, 2008. Ali undertook fatherhood like everything else – with determination and gusto.
For many years Ali worked as a neonatologist in the NICU at Sunrise Hospital, in Las Vegas. Las Vegas has expanded considerably. But for many years Sunrise was the largest and one of only two Level 3 NICUs in Nevada. A significant percentage of Las Vegas natives were born at Sunrise. It was common for Ali to be out in town and hear, “Dr. Piroozi!” Then an excited person would tell him how he treated their child and how much they remembered him and appreciated his excellent care.
In 2015, Ali met the love of his life Corrine, who eventually become his wife. Ali achieved what most cannot. Ali pursued and built a successful medical career – a time-consuming endeavor – while also being an attentive and involved father and a caring and available husband. Despite working long and arduous hours, Ali had endless energy to always make sure his son was properly prepared for any test he might have the next day. When homework was done, Ali was ready for an adventure with his wife and his son. The trio traveled the world together and would also regularly pack up Ali’s Range Rover and head out for a weekend skiing.
Ali touched thousands of lives through his 25-year career, shepherding the most delicate and vulnerable patients and their families through complex medical situations. Ali was a hands-on physician providing direct care to patients, but Ali was also involved in the administrative side of medicine. Ali was instrumental in leveling up other NICUs in Las Vegas, expanding services offered and availability of complex medical care to families all over Nevada. When Ali left the practice of medicine due to his illness in 2022, he was the Medical Director of HCA Neo Practice of Nevada and the NICU Medical Director at Mountain View Hospital.
Ali is survived by his loving wife Corrine, his son Ayden, his mother Zarin and his sisters Hengameh and Nazila. All will miss the sparkle in Ali’s eyes, his toothy, boyish grin, his skill at storytelling, his devotion and endless love for his family, and his incredible generosity. Ali was a gentleman physician who enriched the world with his presence and now joins his long-missed father, Ahmad in heaven.
It is only the best that God is impatient for and takes too soon. We all miss you so much, our dear Ali.
